Abstract

A method and system for managing the routing of traffic within a network develops a topological address space map of the network to enable a “best route” selection process. The network is comprised of a backbone connected to a plurality of peering partners. Points on the network monitor traffic flows. A central facility analyzes the traffic flows and routes within the network and performs intelligent routing management. Intelligent routing management ensures that traffic is properly routed through preferred routes on the network, and avoids inefficient routing. Intelligent routing management also selects new routes to be injected into the network in order to further improve the accuracy of the address space map of the network. Intelligent routing management ensures that bandwidth is requested and delivered topologically closely to peering partner networks, and that traffic is carried by the backbone for long haul data distribution in both directions.

Claims (33)

1. A method for analyzing traffic in a communications network, the method comprising:

collecting Internet Protocol (IP) statistics associated with data packets transceived at a plurality of network interconnection points;

mapping IP addresses of the data packets to corresponding IP prefixes associated with a plurality of networks communicating over the communications network; and

building a composite table of the IP statistics and IP prefixes to yield a composite traffic flow measurement associated with one or more of the networks, wherein the composite table comprises a list of transit next hops associated with at least a first peering partner and a second peering partner of the communications network;

based on the list of transit next hops, determining that the first peering network indirectly accesses the communications network through the second peering network; and

configuring routing information associated with the first peering network to enable the first peering network to directly access the communications network.

2. The method as recited claim 1 , wherein the IP prefixes are obtained from a routing table.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the IP addresses of the data packets are mapped to geographic locations.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising generating one or more traffic flow reports based on the IP statistics, wherein the one or more reports are selected from a group comprising:

a peer distribution report including one or more of traffic volume measurements of traffic outbound from a peer network or traffic volume measurements of traffic inbound to a peer network;

an autonomous system distribution report including average traffic volume, traffic volume by region, on-net traffic volume, off-net traffic volume, direction of traffic, next hop autonomous systems, and upstream autonomous systems associated with one or more autonomous systems;

an on-net distribution report includes traffic volume measurements of traffic outbound from a peer network that was also inbound to the peer network;

an off-net distribution report includes traffic volume measurements of traffic outbound from a peer network that was not also inbound to the peer network; and

a region distribution report including average traffic volume inbound to or outbound from selected regions.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising generating one or more IP statistics summaries at a collector node.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 further comprising communicating the one or more IP statistics summaries from the collector node to a centralized node configured to perform the building of the composite table.

7. A system for analyzing traffic flow in a communications network, the system comprising:

a communications node operable to collect Internet Protocol (IP) statistics associated with data packets flowing through the communications node;

a collector node operable to map IP addresses of the data packets to IP prefixes in a routing table of the communications node; and

a centralized node operable to build a composite table of the IP statistics and the IP prefixes to yield a composite traffic flow measurement of the communications network, wherein the composite table comprises a list of transit next hops associated with at least a first peering partner and a second peering partner of the communications network, the centralized node further operable to:

based on the list of transit next hops, determine that the first peering network indirectly accesses the communications network through the second peering network; and

configure routing information associated with the first peering network to enable the first peering network to directly access the communications network.

8. The system as recited in claim 7 wherein the IP prefixes are associated with respective autonomous systems, and wherein the collector node is further operable to map the data packets to associated autonomous systems.

9. The system as recited in claim 8 , wherein the centralized node is further operable to generate traffic flow measures associated with autonomous systems communicating over the communications network.

10. The system as recited in claim 7 , wherein the centralized node is further operable to generate a traffic flow measurement of outbound traffic from a selected Autonomous System “AS” to each of a plurality of other AS's.

11. The system as recited in claim 7 , wherein the aggregator node is further operable to generate a traffic flow measurement of outbound traffic to a selected Autonomous System “AS” from each of a plurality of other AS's.

12. The system as recited in claim 7 , wherein the aggregator node is further operable to generate a traffic flow measurement of on-net traffic and a traffic flow measurement of off-net traffic for a selected Autonomous System “AS”.

13. A method comprising:

collecting Internet Protocol (IP) statistics of data packets transceived at a plurality of network interconnection points associated with a network backbone;

mapping IP addresses of the data packets to corresponding routing table entries associated with a plurality of networks communicating over the network backbone; and

using the IP statistics and routing table entries to build a composite table that provides aggregated traffic flow measurements associated with the plurality of networks, wherein the composite table includes autonomous system identifiers associated with the plurality of networks, wherein the composite table further includes a list of transit next hops associated with at least a first peering partner and a second peering partner of the communications network;

based on the list of transit next hops, determining that the first peering network indirectly accesses the communications network through the second peering network; and

configuring routing information associated with the first peering network to enable the first peering network to directly access the communications network.
