Abstract

Embodiments provide various components of a chain saw, including saw chain elements, sprockets, and other fixtures, that may facilitate sharpening of cutter links during operation. In various embodiments, the components may increase stability during sharpening, provide nose mounted sharpening fixtures, and/or facilitate the resizing and/or reshaping of a sharpening element.

Claims (41)

1. A cutting chain, comprising:

a cutter link including a cutter portion adapted to be sharpened on an upper edge to form a cutting edge, the cutter link further including a first depth gauge leading the cutter portion; and

a non-cutting link, coupled to the cutter link, including a stabilizer trailing the cutter portion, wherein the stabilizer, depth gauge, and the cutter portion are adapted to, during operation, simultaneously engage a sharpening element as the cutter link traverses a nose of a guide bar.

2. The cutting chain of claim 1 , wherein the cutter link is a twisted cutter link including a twisted cutter portion.

3. The cutting chain of claim 2 , wherein the cutter link includes a brace portion substantially in plane with the cutter link and configured to receive cutting forces from the cutter portion.

4. The cutting chain of claim 2 , wherein the twisted cutter portion of the twisted cutter link is twisted about a twist axis, wherein the twist axis is directed at an angle toward the toe of the cutter link.

5. The cutting chain of claim 2 , wherein the twisted cutter portion of the twisted cutter link is twisted about a twist axis, wherein the twist axis forms an acute angle with a center line of the cutter link.

6. The cutting chain of claim 1 , wherein the cutter link comprises a second depth gauge integral with an opposing tie strap of the cutter link, wherein the first depth gauge and the second depth gauge are configured to condition the sharpening element.

7. The cutting chain of claim 6 , wherein a position of the first and second depth gauges are farther from a center of the cutter link than the upper edge of the cutter link is from the center of the cutter link.

8. The cutting chain of claim 6 , wherein a position of the stabilizer is farther from a center of the cutter link than the first depth gauge of the cutter link.

9. A cutting chain, comprising:

a cutter link including a cutter portion adapted to be sharpened on an upper edge to form a cutting edge and a first depth gauge positioned in front of the cutting edge of the cutter portion;

a non-cutting link, coupled to the cutter link, including a stabilizer, wherein the stabilizer, depth gauge, and the cutter portion are adapted to, during operation, simultaneously engage a sharpening element; and

a conditioning link including an upper surface configured to carry a conditioning material, wherein the conditioning link is positioned in the chain to cause the conditioning material to engage the sharpening element in order to condition the sharpening element.

10. The cutting chain of claim 9 , wherein the conditioning link further comprises a depth gauge configured to delay contact of the conditioning material with the sharpening element.

11. The cutting chain of claim 9 , wherein the conditioning link is one of a left-handed conditioning link and a right-handed conditioning link.

12. The cutting chain of claim 9 , wherein the conditioning link further comprises a second upper surface portion disposed opposite the upper surface, wherein the upper surface and the second upper surface extend generally away from a centerline of the cutting chain.

13. The cutting chain of claim 9 , wherein the conditioning link further comprises at least one of a curved upper surface extending from a leading edge to a trailing edge, a tapered leading edge and a tapered trailing edge.

14. A utility chain, comprising:

a conditioning link including:

a first link plate having a portion upstanding that defines a first plane and an upper surface bent out of the first plane, wherein the upper surface includes a geometrical configuration that allows for a desired portion of the upper surface to engage a sharpening element; and

an abrasive conditioning material adhered to the upper surface of the first link plate and conforming to the geometrical configuration of the surface and is disposed to condition a sharpening element; and

a cutter link coupled to the conditioning link and including a cutting edge configured to be sharpened by the sharpening element.

15. The utility chain of claim 14 , wherein the upper surface is a first upper surface and the conditioning link further comprising:

a second link plate disposed opposite the first link plate having a portion upstanding that defines a second plane parallel to the first plane and a second upper surface bent out of the second plane, wherein the first upper surface of the first link plate and the second upper surface of the second link plate extend generally away from a centerline of the utility chain.

16. The utility chain of claim 14 , wherein the geometrical configuration of the upper surface is configured to enable a front portion of the upper surface to engage the sharpening element before a rear portion of the upper surface.

17. The utility chain of claim 14 , wherein a width of the conditioning link is between 0.050 and 0.26 inches.

18. The utility chain of claim 14 , wherein the first link plate includes a depth gauge, and the upper surface is disposed below the depth gauge.

19. The utility chain of claim 14 , wherein the geometrical configuration of the upper surface is configured to enable a rear portion of the upper surface to engage the sharpening element before a front portion of the upper surface.

20. A cutting system comprising:

a cutting chain having a cutter link including a cutter element and a depth gauge leading the cutter element, and a non-cutting link including a stabilizer trailing the cutter element, wherein the chain is configured to engage a guide bar and a chainsaw drive sprocket;

a sharpening element disposed proximal to the cutting chain;

an actuator coupled to the sharpening element and adapted to selectively urge the sharpening element into contact with the cutting chain, wherein when the cutter element is in contact with the sharpening element and the cutter link is traversing the chainsaw drive sprocket, the depth gauge and the stabilizer are simultaneously in contact with the sharpening element.

21. The system of claim 20 , further comprising the chainsaw drive sprocket, wherein the sharpening element is further positioned proximal to the chainsaw drive sprocket.

22. The system of claim 20 , further comprising the guide bar, wherein the sharpening element is further positioned proximal to a nose of the guide bar.

23. The system of claim 20 , wherein the cutter element includes a sharpened cutting edge configured to be sharpened by the sharpening element, and wherein the cutting chain further comprises a conditioning link including an upper surface having an abrasive and adapted to cause the abrasive to engage the sharpening element in order to condition the sharpening element.

24. The system of claim 20 , further comprising the chainsaw drive sprocket, wherein the chainsaw drive sprocket includes:

radially directed sprocket teeth forming a plurality of gullets, wherein each gullet is configured to receive a drive tang of a drive link; and

a support rim coaxially disposed on each side of the radially directed sprocket teeth, wherein the support rims include a plurality of facets configured to support the cutter link as the cutter link traverses the sprocket and engages a sharpening element.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the support rims comprise a step on each of the plurality of facets, wherein the step is configured to elevate a portion of the cutter link to enhance engagement with the sharpening element.

26. The system of claim 20 , wherein the cutter element is a twisted cutter link including a twist axis that forms an acute angle with a centerline of the cutting chain and a brace portion configured to receive operations forces.
