Abstract

In cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and other information transmission systems, a method for changing the interleave depth associated with each data stream is provided. This may be done dynamically, and for any subset of downstream devices such as modems. The interleave depth may be set on an individual device level. Embodiments may decrease data receiving latency on devices that do not suffer from error rates, such as caused by burst noise, while maintaining throughput on devices with high error rates.

Claims (54)

1. A method of sending multiple data streams comprising:

associating a first interleave depth with a first data stream destined for a first device;

associating a second interleave depth with a second data stream destined for a second device different from the first device, the second interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth;

associating timeslots with each of the first data stream and the second data stream based on the first interleave depth and the second interleave depth; and

transmitting, from a computing device to the first device and the second device, data from each of the first data stream and the second data stream during the associated timeslots.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting, from the computing device, a map containing sufficient information to determine which timeslots are associated with each data stream.

3. The method if claim 1 , wherein the first data stream is transmitted at the first interleave depth, and the second data stream is transmitted at the second interleave depth.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

associating a third interleave depth with the first data stream, the third interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from the first device, a first error rate associated with the first data stream;

determining whether to increase or decrease the first interleave depth associated with the first data stream based on the first error rate.

6. The method if claim 5 , further comprising:

receiving, from the second device, a second error rate associated with the second data stream; and

determining whether to increase or decrease the second interleave depth based on the second error rate,

wherein, in one case, the first interleave depth is increased or decreased by a first amount, and the second interleave depth is increased or decreased by a second amount different from the first amount.

7. A method of receiving a data stream comprising:

receiving, at a first computing device, a map that indicates which timeslots are associated with each of a plurality of data streams;

determining from the map which timeslots are associated with a first data stream destined for the first computing device;

receiving data during the determined timeslots; and

transmitting an indication of an error rate in the received data to a sender of the data,

wherein the first data stream is received together with a second data stream destined for a second computing device different from the first computing device, and

wherein the first data stream is associated with a first interleave depth and the second data stream is associated with a second interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the indication of the error rate is a request to increase or decrease the interleave depth used by the sender.

9. The method if claim 7 , wherein the map includes a list associating a plurality of timeslots with a plurality of computing devices, wherein each of the plurality of timeslots is respectively associated with one of the plurality of computing devices.

10. The method if claim 7 , further comprising:

discarding, by the first computing device, data associated with the second data stream destined for the second computing device.

11. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing computer readable instructions which, when read by a computer, instruct the computer to:

associate a first interleave depth with a first data stream destined for a first device;

associate a second interleave depth with a second data stream destined for a second device different from the first device, the second interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth;

associate timeslots with each of the first data stream and the second data stream based on the first interleave depth and the second interleave depth; and

transmit data from each of the first data stream and the second data stream during the associated timeslots.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable storage medium stores further computer readable instructions which, when read by the computer, instruct the computer to:

transmit a map containing sufficient information to determine which timeslots are associated with each data stream.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the first data stream is transmitted at the first interleave depth, and the second data stream is transmitted at the second interleave depth.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable storage medium stores further computer readable instructions which, when read by the computer, instruct the computer to:

associate a third interleave depth with the first data stream, the third interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the computer readable storage medium stores further computer readable instructions which, when read by the computer, instruct the computer to:

receive an error rate associated with the first data stream;

determine whether to increase or decrease the interleave depth associated with the first data stream based on the error rate.

16. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing computer readable instructions which, when read by a computer, instruct the computer to:

receive a map;

determine from the map which timeslots are associated with a first data stream destined for a first computing device;

receive data during the determined timeslots; and

transmit an indication of an error rate in the received data to a sender of the data,

wherein the first data stream is received together with a second data stream destined for a second computing device different from the first computing device, and

wherein the first data stream is associated with a first interleave depth and the second data stream is associated with a second interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the indication of the error rate is a request to increase or decrease the interleave depth used by the sender.

18. An apparatus comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the apparatus to:

dynamically vary a plurality of interleave depths respectively associated with a plurality of data streams respectively destined for a plurality of devices,

wherein the plurality of interleave depths include a first interleave depth and a second interleave depth being different from the first interleave depth.
