Abstract

A medical catheter comprising a first return lumen, a plurality of withdrawal lumens, a first clamping member and a plurality of intake extension tubes. Each intake extension tube communicates with an intake lumen of the catheter to provide fluid communication with the respective intake lumens. The intake extension tubes are positioned in a stacked arrangement, and the clamping member has a plurality of posts to receive the stacked tubes to limit lateral movement thereof.

Claims (21)

1. A dialysis catheter comprising a catheter body having first portion having a first diameter, an elongated distal portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, and a transition region between the first portion and distal portion, a first longitudinally extending central delivery lumen configured to deliver blood terminating in an opening in the distal portion, and at least two independent longitudinally extending withdrawal lumens positioned radially of the first lumen, the at least two withdrawal lumens configured to withdraw blood from a patient and each terminating in a longitudinally directed opening in the transition region, and a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs extending radially from an outer surface of the catheter and axially partially along the outer surface of the distal portion of the catheter along a length of the catheter to thereby increase a cross-sectional dimension of the distal portion of the catheter distal of the longitudinally extending withdrawal lumens, and the longitudinally extending ribs terminating proximal of the opening in the central lumen.

2. The dialysis catheter of claim 1 , wherein the central lumen is circular in configuration.

3. The dialysis catheter of claim 2 , wherein the withdrawal lumens are kidney shaped.

4. The dialysis catheter of claim 1 , wherein the withdrawal lumens are kidney shaped.

5. The dialysis catheter of claim 1 , wherein the each of withdrawal lumens has a cross-sectional configuration with first and second opposing walls and third and fourth walls joining the first and second walls on opposite sides, the first, second, third and fourth walls being curved.

6. The dialysis catheter of claim 1 , wherein the catheter includes a plurality of side openings communicating with the central lumen and the reinforcing ribs terminate proximally of the side openings.

7. The dialysis catheter of claim 1 , wherein the catheter includes a plurality of side openings communicating with the central lumen and the reinforcing ribs terminate proximally of the side openings.

8. A dialysis catheter comprising a body having first portion having a first diameter, an elongated distal portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, and a transition region between the first portion and distal portion, a first longitudinally extending blood delivery lumen configured to deliver blood, the blood delivery lumen terminating in an opening at a distalmost tip of the catheter, and at least two independent longitudinally extending blood withdrawal lumens, the at least two withdrawal lumens configured to withdraw blood from a patient and each terminating in a longitudinally directed opening in the transition region spaced proximally from the opening in the blood delivery lumen, and a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs extending radially from an outer surface of the catheter from the transition region and axially partially along the outer surface of the catheter to provide a raised surface and terminating proximal of the opening in the delivery lumen, wherein a length of the ribs exceeds a length of the longitudinally directed openings so as to extend beyond the transition region and over the distal portion of the catheter.

9. The dialysis catheter of claim 8 , wherein the delivery lumen is circular in configuration.

10. The dialysis catheter of claim 9 , wherein each of the withdrawal lumens has a cross-sectional configuration with first and second opposing walls and third and fourth walls joining the first and second walls on opposite sides, the first, second, third and fourth walls being curved.

11. The dialysis catheter of claim 8 , wherein a wall at the longitudinally directed opening curves toward a proximal portion of the catheter.

12. The dialysis catheter of claim 8 , wherein each of the withdrawal lumens has a cross-sectional configuration with first and second opposing walls and third and fourth walls joining the first and second walls on opposite sides, the first, second, third and fourth walls being curved.

13. The dialysis catheter of claim 12 , wherein the catheter includes a side opening in a sidewall of the catheter communicating with the delivery lumen and the reinforcing ribs terminate proximally of the side opening.

14. The dialysis catheter of claim 8 , wherein the catheter includes a side opening in a sidewall of the catheter communicating with the delivery lumen and the reinforcing ribs terminate proximally of the side opening.

15. A dialysis catheter comprising a first portion having a first diameter, an elongated distal portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, and a transition region between the first portion and distal portion, a first longitudinally extending central delivery lumen configured to deliver blood terminating in an opening in the distal portion, and at least two independent longitudinally extending withdrawal lumens positioned radially of the first lumen, the at least two withdrawal lumens configured to withdraw blood from a patient and each terminating in a longitudinally directed opening in a transition region, and a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs extending partially along an outer surface of the catheter and terminating proximal of the opening in the central lumen, the reinforcing ribs extending from the longitudinally directed openings, separating the withdrawal lumens such that adjacent withdrawal lumens share a common rib wherein a length of the ribs exceeds a length of the longitudinally directed openings so as to extend beyond the transition region and over the distal portion of the catheter.

16. The dialysis catheter of claim 15 , wherein the longitudinally directed openings for the withdrawal lumens are axially aligned.

17. A dialysis catheter comprising a first portion having a first diameter, an elongated distal portion having a second diameter smaller than the first diameter, and a transition region between the first portion and distal portion, a first longitudinally extending blood delivery lumen configured to deliver blood, the delivery lumen terminating in an opening at a distalmost tip of the catheter, and at least two independent longitudinally extending blood withdrawal lumens, the at least two withdrawal lumens configured to withdraw blood from a patient and each terminating in a longitudinally directed opening in the transition region spaced proximally from the opening in the blood delivery lumen, and a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing ribs extending from the transition region and partially along an outer surface of the distal portion of the catheter forming a raised outer surface as they extend longitudinally along the outer surface to thereby increase a cross-sectional dimension of the distal portion of the catheter distal of the longitudinally extending withdrawal lumens and terminating proximal of the opening in the delivery lumen, the reinforcing ribs separating the withdrawal lumens such that the withdrawal lumens share a common rib.

18. The dialysis catheter of claim 17 , wherein the delivery lumen is circular in configuration.

19. The dialysis catheter of claim 17 , wherein each of the withdrawal lumens has a cross-sectional configuration with first and second opposing walls and third and fourth walls joining the first and second walls on opposite sides, the first, second, third and fourth walls being curved.
