Abstract

Disclosed is an apparatus for an application including a core device for the application. The apparatus includes a power (preferably RF energy) harvester connected to the core device to power the core device. Also disclosed is a method for an application. The method includes the steps of converting RF energy into usable energy. There is the step of powering the core device with the usable energy.

Claims (47)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a power harvester configured to convert energy received via an antenna to a DC voltage;

a power storage device configured to store a power associated with the DC voltage;

a power storage charger operatively coupled to the power harvester, the power harvester configured to provide an activation signal to the power storage charger to trigger storage of the power associated with the DC voltage at the power storage device;

a sensor configured to operate based on the DC voltage, the sensor configured to detect an environmental condition associated with a location of the sensor; and

an integrated circuit configured to operate based on the DC voltage, the integrated circuit configured to perform an application associated with the environmental condition detected by the sensor.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the DC voltage is a first DC voltage, the integrated circuit is configured to operate based on the first DC voltage or a second DC voltage from a power source.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the power associated with the DC voltage is a first power associated with the DC voltage; and

the integrated circuit is configured to produce a control signal that causes a second power associated with the DC voltage to be transferred from the power harvester to the integrated circuit.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the sensor and the integrated circuit are each configured to operate based on the power associated with the DC voltage stored in the power storage device; and

the power harvester is configured to be disabled when the power associated with the DC voltage stored in the power storage device is sufficient for at least one of the sensor or the integrated circuit to operate.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the power storage charger configured to control storage of the power associated with the DC voltage at the power storage device, the power storage charger configured to operate in a power pulse charging mode.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the power storage charger configured to control storage of the power associated with the DC voltage at the power storage device, the power storage charger configured to operate in a power pulse charging mode or a power trickle charging mode.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the power harvester is configured to receive at least one of an ambient radio frequency energy, a directed radio frequency energy, or an energy from a power source connected to the power harvester.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the integrated circuit is configured to provide a deactivation signal to a power source when the power associated with the DC voltage is more than a predetermined power value, the deactivation signal configured to impede output of a power from the power source, the power source different from the power harvester and the power storage device.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power storage device is a first power storage device, the apparatus further comprising:

a second power storage device operatively coupled to the first power storage device and the integrated circuit, the second power storage device configured to store a portion of the power associated with the DC voltage and provide the portion of the power associated with the DC voltage to at least one of the sensor or the integrated circuit.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is part of a radio-frequency identification tag.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a display configured to operate, at least in part, based on the DC voltage.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is at least one of a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, a stress sensor, a strain sensor, a vibration sensor, an accelerometer, a level sensor, or a light sensor.

13. An apparatus, comprising:

a power harvester configured to convert energy received via an antenna to a DC voltage to produce a power associated with the DC voltage;

a regulator coupled to the power harvester and configured to regulate the power associated with the DC voltage, the regulator configured to transfer the regulated power to a power storage charger of the apparatus;

a power storage device configured to store power;

the power storage charger coupled to the power harvester and the regulator, the power storage charger configured to control the storage of the regulated power associated with the DC voltage to the power storage device; and

an integrated circuit configured to operate based on the power received from the power harvester or from the power storage device,

the power harvester configured to transfer power associated with the DC voltage to the regulator, the power harvester configured to transfer power associated with the DC voltage to the power storage device, the power harvester configured to transfer power associated with the DC voltage to the integrated circuit.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein:

the power storage charger is configured to operate in a power pulse charging mode or a power trickle charging mode.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to operate based on the power received from the power harvester or from the power storage device, the sensor configured to detect an environmental condition associated with a location of the sensor or a physical condition associated with an item coupled to the sensor, the integrated circuit configured to perform an application associated with the environmental condition or the physical condition detected by the sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein:
