Abstract

A current transformer is provided. The current transformer comprises an inner magnetic core having a central opening, an outer sense core circumscribing the inner magnetic core, at least one pair of conductors extending through the central opening and positioned symmetrically with respect to a center point of the inner magnetic core, and one or more coils disposed on the inner magnetic core, the outer sense core, or both, in a magnetically balanced configuration relative to a magnetic neutral axis of the inner magnetic core.

Claims (25)

1. A current transformer comprising:

an inner magnetic core having a central opening;

an outer sense core circumscribing the inner magnetic core;

a first conductor and a second conductor extending through the central opening; wherein the first conductor conducts a first current and induces a first magnetic flux and the second conductor conducts a second current and induces a second magnetic flux in a direction opposite to the first magnetic flux, wherein the first magnetic flux and the second magnetic flux forms a magnetic neutral axis; and

one or more coils wound on the outer sense core, along the magnetic neutral axis, for measuring a differential current between the first current and the second current, wherein the inner magnetic core provides an internal magnetic shielding to the outer sense core.

2. The current transformer of claim 1 , wherein the inner magnetic core comprises silicon steel, alloys, ferrites or combinations thereof.

3. The current transformer of claim 1 , wherein the outer sense core comprises silicon steel, alloys, ferrites, ferrimagnetics, anti-ferromagnetics, or combinations thereof.

4. The current transformer of claim 1 , wherein the one or more coils comprise sense coils.

5. The current transformer of claim 4 , wherein the one or more coils comprise leakage sense coils.

6. The current transformer of claim 1 , wherein the inner magnetic core and the outer sense core comprise materials having different permeabilities.

7. The current transformer of claim 1 , wherein the second current is substantially equal in magnitude to the first current.

8. A current transformer, comprising:

an inner magnetic core having a central opening;

an outer sense core circumscribing the inner magnetic core;

a first conductor and a second conductor extending through the central opening; wherein the first conductor conducts a first current and induces a first magnetic flux and the second conductor conducts a second current and induces a second magnetic flux in a direction opposite to the first magnetic flux, wherein the first magnetic flux and the second magnetic flux forms a magnetic neutral axis;

one or more first coils disposed on the inner magnetic core, along a reference axis, wherein the reference axis is perpendicular to the magnetic neutral axis; and

one or more second coils disposed on the outer sense core, along the magnetic neutral axis, for measuring a differential current between the first current and the second current, wherein the inner magnetic core provides an internal magnetic shielding to the outer sense core.

9. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the inner magnetic core comprises a solid core or a split core.

10. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the inner magnetic core comprises a silicon steel, ferro alloys, ferrites, or combinations thereof.

11. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the inner magnetic core is a circular core or a polygonal core.

12. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the outer sense core comprises silicon steel, alloys, ferrites, ferrimagnetics, anti-ferromagnetics, or combinations thereof.

13. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the outer sense core comprises a circular core or a polygonal core.

14. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the second current is substantially equal in magnitude to the first current.

15. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the one or more first coils disposed on the inner magnetic core, are configured to detect a partial discharge or load current.

16. The current transformer of claim 8 , wherein the one or more second coils disposed on the outer sense core are configured to detect a leakage current.
