Apparatus for transcutaneously treating tissue
View Patent ↗An apparatus for transcutaneously treating tissue beneath a skin surface using radiofrequency energy. The apparatus includes an electrode assembly supported by a handpiece. The electrode assembly includes an electrode configured to transfer the radiofrequency energy through the skin surface to the tissue. A force sensor, which is located in the handpiece, is configured to detect an amount of force applied by the electrode against the skin surface.
1. An apparatus for transcutaneously treating tissue beneath a skin surface using radiofrequency energy, the apparatus comprising:
a handpiece;
an electrode assembly supported by the handpiece, the electrode assembly including an electrode with a dielectric portion and a conductive portion disposed on the dielectric portion, the conductive portion of the electrode configured to deliver the radiofrequency energy to the tissue, and the dielectric portion of the electrode adapted to be positioned between the conductive portion and the skin surface such that the radiofrequency energy is transmitted from the conductive portion through the dielectric portion and into the skin to capacitively couple the radiofrequency energy into the skin; and
a force sensor in the handpiece, the force sensor configured to detect an amount of force applied by the electrode against the skin surface.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
a thermocouple, a thermistor, an infrared photo-emitter, a thermally sensitive diode, an optical sensor, a current sensor, a voltage sensor, an impedance sensor, or a flow sensor coupled to the electrode assembly.
3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the dielectric portion and the conductive portion comprise a flex circuit, and the force sensor is coupled to the flex circuit.
4. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
a cooling media delivery member coupled to the electrode assembly, the cooling media delivery member configured to deliver a cooling media to the electrode assembly.
5. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising:
a non-volatile memory coupled to the electrode assembly, the non-volatile memory configured to store at least one of a duty cycle for controlling the cooling media delivery member, a number of times the electrode assembly has been moved relative to the skin surface, or a number of areas treated by the electrode assembly.
6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the non-volatile memory is mechanically coupled to the electrode assembly.
7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
a non-volatile memory coupled to the electrode assembly.
8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the non-volatile memory is configured to store at least one of a number of times the electrode assembly has been moved relative to the skin surface, or a number of areas treated by the electrode assembly.
9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the non-volatile memory is mechanically coupled with the electrode assembly.
10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrode assembly is configured to reduce at least one of an edge effect, an electrode edge effect, an electrode temperature gradient, an electrode current density gradient, or a tissue interface surface temperature gradient.
11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the force sensor is configured to zero out gravity effects of the weight of the electrode.
12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the force sensor is configured to zero out gravity effects of the weight of the electrode in any orientation of a front surface of the electrode relative to a direction of gravity.
13. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
an activation button coupled to the force sensor, the activation button configured to respond to user input to tare the force sensor.
