Abstract

An ophthalmic surgical laser system includes a laser engine, to generate a laser beam, a first Z scanner, to receive the generated laser beam, and to scan a focal spot of the laser system over a first Z interval along an optical axis of the laser system an XY scanner, to receive the laser beam output by the first Z scanner, and to scan the focal spot of the laser system in a direction essentially transverse to the optical axis of the laser system, and a second Z scanner, to receive the scanned laser beam from the XY scanner, and to scan the focal spot of the laser system over a second Z interval along the optical axis of the laser system.

Claims (43)

1. A surgical laser system comprising:

a laser engine for generating a laser beam;

a multi-function beam conditioner for receiving the laser beam from the laser engine;

the multi-function beam conditioner comprising

a first beam controller;

a second beam controller;

the first and second beam controllers controlling a first and a second beam characteristic; and

an XY scanner for scanning the beam in an XY transverse direction, wherein

the first beam controller is positioned before the XY scanner and outputs a beam with a controlled first characteristic; and

the second beam controller is positioned after the XY scanner and outputs a beam with a controlled first and second characteristic, wherein

the second beam controller is a multi-block controller, having a third controller block and a fourth controller block.

2. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first beam controller and the second beam controller share one or more optical elements.

3. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first beam controller is a multi-block controller, having a first controller block and a second controller block positioned before the XY scanner.

4. The laser system of claim 3 , wherein:

the first controller block and the second controller block share an optical element.

5. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the third controller block and the fourth controller blocks share an optical element.

6. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first beam controller is a numerical aperture controller and the second beam controller is a Z scanner.

7. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the third controller block is configured to scan a Z depth of the focal spot at a first Z scanning speed; and

the fourth controller block is configured to scan the Z depth of the focal spot at a second Z scanning speed.

8. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the third controller block is a first beam expander block and the fourth controller block is a movable beam expander block.

9. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the third controller block is a Z scanner and the fourth controller block is a numerical aperture controller.

10. The laser system of claim 1 , wherein:

the third controller block and the fourth controller block are both numerical aperture controllers.

11. A method of conditioning a surgical laser beam, the method comprising:

generating a laser beam;

receiving the laser beam by a multi-function beam conditioner;

controlling a first beam characteristic with a first beam controller and a second beam characteristic with a second beam controller of the multi-function beam conditioner; and

scanning the beam in an XY transverse direction with an XY scanner, wherein

the first beam characteristic is controlled before the XY scanning and the second beam characteristic is controlled after the XY scanning, and

the second beam controller is a multi-block controller, having a third controller block and a fourth controller block.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the first beam controller is a multi-block controller, having a first controller block and a second controller block positioned before the XY scanner.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the first beam controller is a numerical aperture controller and the second multi beam controller is a Z scanner.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the third controller block is a first beam expander block and the fourth controller block is a movable beam expander block.
