Abstract

Non-toxic aqueous compositions are provided having antibacterial activity. Specifically, the invention provides aqueous alkyl glycoside or saccharide alkyl ester compositions which meet the antimicrobial effectiveness test criteria set forth in USP 31 <51> in preventing growth of specified bacteria and fungi.

Claims (9)

1. A method of inhibiting microbial growth in an aqueous pharmaceutical composition comprising, admixing:

a) at least one alkylsaccharide having antibacterial activity, wherein the alkylsaccharide consists of an alkyl chain length from t 2 to 14 carbon atoms linked by glycosidic linkage to a maltose, wherein the alkylsaccharide is n-Dodecyl-4-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-β-D-glucopyranoside;

b) at least one therapeutic peptide, wherein the therapeutic peptide is a parathyroid hormone (PTH) or analog thereof, and wherein the PTH analog is PTH (1-31), PTH (1-34) or PTH (3-34); and

c) ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or a salt thereof, wherein the at least one alkylsaccharide and the EDTA or salt thereof are present in amount sufficient to inhibit microbial growth of Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus , and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of the alkylsaccharide is about 0.05% to 0.5% by weight.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the concentration of alkylsaccharide is about 0.125% to 0.25% by weight.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of EDTA is from about 0.01% to 2% by weight.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pH is about 7.0 or less.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is formulated for administration transmucosally, transdermally, optically, or by injection.
