Abstract

Detergent compositions of the present invention are flowable powders comprising an alkali metal salt and a builder. Optional ingredients may include an oil and/or a surfactant. The ingredients making up the detergent composition are combined into flowable powders that may be added to a wash solution. The detergent compositions may be particularly suited for use with automated metering and dispensing devices for granulated materials.

Claims (102)

1 . A detergent dispenser assembly, comprising:

a container within which is retained an amount of detergent composition, the container defining an opening;

a closure at least partially covering the opening of the container; and

an aperture defined in the closure and through which the detergent composition retained in the container is dispensed, wherein the aperture is selectively opened and closed to permit and block detergent composition dispense through the aperture;

wherein the detergent composition comprises

an alkali metal salt;

a builder; and

an oil,

wherein the ratio by weight of builder to alkali metal salt in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:20 to about 20:1, and

wherein the ratio by weight of oil to builder in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:60 to about 1:4.

2 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH, KOH, Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , anhydrous sodium metasilicate, a liquid silicate and combinations thereof.

3 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH.

The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate, nitrilotriacetic acid, trisodium salt of ethyl glycine diacetic acid, trisodium salt of methyl glycine diacetic acid, ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, zeolite, sodium citrate and combinations thereof.

5 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate.

6 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the builder comprises anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate.

7 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 6 , wherein the ratio by weight of oil to anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate in the detergent composition is about 1:15.

8 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the oil comprises mineral oil.

9 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , further comprising at least about 1% by weight surfactant.

10 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 9 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant and combinations thereof.

11 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a bleaching agent.

12 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 11 , wherein the bleaching agent is sodium dichloro-isocyanurate.

13 . A method of washing tableware in a mechanical dishwasher, the method comprising treating soiled tableware in a mechanical dishwasher with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 1 .

14 . A method of washing clothing in a mechanical laundry washer, the method comprising treating soiled clothing in a mechanical laundry washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 1 .

15 . A method of washing vehicles in a mechanical car wash, the method comprising treating a soiled vehicle in a mechanical car wash with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 1 .

16 . A method of washing eggs using a mechanical egg washer, the method comprising treating soiled eggs in a mechanical egg washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 1 .

17 . A method of dispensing a detergent using a metering and dispensing device, the method comprising dispensing the composition of claim 1 through the metering and dispensing device into wash water.

18 . The detergent dispenser assembly of claim 1 , wherein the closure has a body in which the aperture is defined, at least one portion of the closure being rotatable with respect to the body to selectively block detergent composition dispense through the aperture.

19 . A method of dispensing a detergent composition, comprising:

blocking dispense of the detergent composition through an opening of a container with a closure;

moving a portion of the closure with respect to another portion of the closure to permit movement of the detergent composition through an aperture in the closure;

wherein the detergent composition comprises

an alkali metal salt;

a builder; and

an oil,

wherein the ratio by weight of builder to alkali metal salt in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:20 to about 20:1, and

wherein the ratio by weight of oil to builder in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:60 to about 1:4.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH, KOH, Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , anhydrous sodium metasilicate, a liquid silicate and combinations thereof.

21 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH.

22 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate, nitrilotriacetic acid, trisodium salt of ethyl glycine diacetic acid, trisodium salt of methyl glycine diacetic acid, ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, zeolite, sodium citrate and combinations thereof.

23 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate.

24 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the builder comprises anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the ratio by weight of oil to anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate in the detergent composition is about 1:15.

26 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the oil comprises mineral oil.

27 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising at least about 1% by weight surfactant.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant and combinations thereof.

29 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising a bleaching agent.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the bleaching agent is sodium dichloro-isocyanurate.

31 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

dispensing the detergent composition into a mechanical dishwasher; and

treating soiled tableware in the mechanical dishwasher with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition.

32 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

dispensing the detergent composition into a mechanical laundry washer; and

treating soiled clothing in the mechanical laundry washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition.

33 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

dispensing the detergent composition within a flow of diluent in a mechanical car wash;

treating a soiled vehicle in the mechanical car wash an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition.

34 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising:

dispensing the detergent composition in a mechanical egg washer; and

treating soiled eggs in the mechanical egg washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition.

35 . The method of claim 19 , further comprising metering the detergent composition via the closure.

36 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the closure has a body in which the aperture is defined, at least one portion of the closure being rotatable with respect to the body to selectively block detergent composition dispense through the opening.

37 . A detergent composition comprising:

an alkali metal salt;

a builder; and

an oil,

wherein the ratio by weight of builder to alkali metal salt in the detergent composition ranges from about 3:1 to about 1:3, and

wherein the ratio by weight of oil to builder in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:60 to about 1:4.

38 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH, KOH, Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , anhydrous sodium metasilicate, a liquid silicate and combinations thereof.

39 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH.

40 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate, nitrilotriacetic acid, trisodium salt of ethyl glycine diacetic acid, trisodium salt of methyl glycine diacetic acid, ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, zeolite, sodium citrate and combinations thereof.

41 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate.

42 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the builder comprises anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate.

43 . The composition of claim 42 , wherein the ratio by weight of oil to anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate in the detergent composition is about 1:15.

44 . The composition of claim 37 , wherein the oil comprises mineral oil.

45 . The composition of claim 37 , further comprising at least about 1% by weight surfactant.

46 . The composition of claim 45 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant and combinations thereof.

47 . The composition of claim 37 , further comprising a bleaching agent.

48 . The composition of claim 47 , wherein the bleaching agent is sodium dichloro-isocyanurate.

49 . A method of washing tableware in a mechanical dishwasher, the method comprising treating soiled tableware in a mechanical dishwasher with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 37 .

50 . A method of washing clothing in a mechanical laundry washer, the method comprising treating soiled clothing in a mechanical laundry washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 37 .

51 . A method of washing vehicles in a mechanical car wash, the method comprising treating a soiled vehicle in a mechanical car wash with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 37 .

52 . A method of washing eggs using a mechanical egg washer, the method comprising treating soiled eggs in a mechanical egg washer with an aqueous solution comprising the detergent composition according to claim 37 .

53 . A method of dispensing a detergent using a metering and dispensing device, the method comprising dispensing the composition of claim 37 through the metering and dispensing device into wash water.

54 . A method of making a detergent composition, the method comprising:

loading an oil onto a builder;

combining the builder with an alkali metal salt; and

mixing the builder and alkali metal salt to produce a detergent composition,

wherein the ratio by weight of builder to alkali metal salt in the detergent composition ranges from about 3:1 to about 1:3.

55 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the oil is loaded onto the builder by spray coating.

56 . The method of claim 54 , wherein mixing is accomplished with one of a tumbler blender, a ribbon blender or a kitchen aid mixer.

57 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the ration of oil to builder in the detergent composition ranges from about 1:60 to about 1:4 by weight.

58 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH, KOH, Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , anhydrous sodium metasilicate, a liquid silicate and combinations thereof.

59 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the alkali metal salt comprises NaOH.

60 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate, nitrilotriacetic acid, trisodium salt of ethyl glycine diacetic acid, trisodium salt of methyl glycine diacetic acid, ethylene diamine tetracetic acid, zeolite, sodium citrate and combinations thereof.

61 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the builder comprises sodium tripolyphosphate.

62 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the builder comprises anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate.

63 . The method of claim 62 , wherein the amount of oil loaded onto the anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate is in an oil to anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate ratio of about 1:15.

64 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the oil comprises mineral oil.

65 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising adding surfactant to the builder and alkali metal salt prior to the mixing step, wherein the amount of surfactant in the detergent composition is at least 1%.

66 . The method of claim 64 , wherein the surfactant comprises a nonionic surfactant, a cationic surfactant and combinations thereof.

67 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising adding a bleaching agent to the builder and alkali metal salt prior to the mixing step.

68 . The method of claim 67 , wherein the bleaching agent is sodium dichloro-isocyanurate.
