Abstract

Metal complexes of the formula I or I′ [LDH] n M[L] m (I) [LTH](M[L] p ) 2 (I1) wherein n is an integer 1 or 2, m and p each is an integer 1 or 2, the sum (n+m) being 2 or 3, M is a metal with an atomic weight of greater than 40 such as Iridium, L is a ligand as described in claim 1 , and LDH is a bidentate ligand of the formula I1 and LTH is a dimer of LDH, binding to 2 metal atoms M, of the formula II′ wherein W is selected from O, S, NR 4 , CR 5 R 6 , X is N or CR 7 , Y is selected from O, S, NR 8 ; and further residues are as defined in claim 1 , show good light emitting efficiency in electroluminescent applications.

Claims (264)

1. Compound of the formula I or I′

[LDH] n M[L] m   (I)

[LTH](M[L] p ) 2   (I′)

wherein

n is an integer 1 or 2,

m and p each is an integer 1 or 2,

the sum (n+m) being 2 or 3,

M is a metal with an atomic weight of greater than 40,

L is a moiety

consisting of

2 monodentate ligands CyC and CyN or CyC and CyC, or

1 bidentate ligand other than LDH or LTH, wherein the 2 moieties CyC and CyN, or CyC and CyC, are interlinked by a chemical bond,

wherein CyC is an organic moiety containing a carbon atom bonding to M, and CyN is a cyclic organic moiety containing a nitrogen atom bonding to M;

LDH is a bidentate ligand of the formula II

and LTH is a dimer of LDH, binding to 2 metal atoms M, of the formula II′

wherein

W is selected from O, S, NR 4 and CR 5 R 6 ,

X is N or CH,

Y is selected from O, S and NR 8 ;

R 1 and R 2 independently are H, unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 18 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 5 -C 10 aryl, unsubstituted or substituted C 5 -C 10 heteroaryl, C 1 -C 18 acyl, halogen, C 1 -C 18 alkoxy,

C 1 -C 18 alkylthio, C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyl, C 1 -C 18 acyloxy, C 5 -C 10 aryloxy,

C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyloxy, COR, CH═NR, CH═N—OH, CH═N—OR, COOR, CONHR, CONRR′, CONH—NHR, CONH—NRR′, SO 2 R, SO 3 R, SO 2 NHR, SO 2 NRR′,

SO 2 NH—NHR, SO 2 NH—NRR′, S(O)R, S(O)OR, S(O)NHR, S(O)NRR′, S(O)NH—NHR,

S(O)NH—NRR′, SiRR′R″, PORR′, PO(OR)R′, PO(OR) 2 , PO(NHR) 2 , PO(NRR′) 2 , CN, NO 2 , NHR, NRR′, NH—NHR, NH—NRR′ or CONROH;

R is H, C 1 -C 12 alkyl, C 5 -C 10 aryl or C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyl,

R′ and R″ independently are selected from C 1 -C 12 alkyl, C 5 -C 10 aryl and C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyl,

or neighbouring residues R 1 and R 2 form an organic bridging group completing, together with the carbon atoms they are bonding to, a carbocyclic or heterocyclic, non-aromatic or aromatic ring of 5 to 7 ring atoms in total, which optionally may be substituted;

R 4 , R 5 , R 6 independently are H, unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 18 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 5 -C 10 aryl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 10 heteroaryl, C 1 -C 18 acyl;

R 3 is H, unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 18 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 5 -C 10 aryl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 10 heteroaryl, C 1 -C 18 acyl, OR, SR, NRR′, or is C 2 -C 5 alkynyl, C 3 -C 5 cycloalkyl, hetero-C 2 -C 5 cycloalkyl or C 3 -C 5 cycloalkenyl each unsubstituted or mono- or poly-substituted by COR, COOR, CONRR′, CN, halogen and/or by OR;

R′ 3 is unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 18 alkylene, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 18 alkenylene, unsubstituted or substituted C 5 -C 10 arylene, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 10 heteroarylene or C 2 -C 18 diacylene; and

R 8 is hydrogen or a substituent.

2. Compound of claim 1 , wherein formula I is formula (III) or tautomeric forms thereof,

wherein

is a bidentate C,N-binding ligand, CyC and CyN are interlinked by a chemical bond,

n is 1,

M is Ir and m is 2 or

M is Pt and m is 1;

W is O, S, NR 4 , CR 5 R 6 ,

X is N or CH,

Y is O or NR 8 ;

R 1 , R 2 independently are selected from H, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, phenyl, halogen, C 1 -C 8 alkoxy, CN, NHR, NRR′;

or R 1 and R 2 together with the carbon atoms they are bonding to form an annellated phenyl ring, which optionally may be substituted;

R 3 is H, unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 8 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 8 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted phenyl;

R 4 , R 5 , R 6 independently are H or C 1 -C 8 alkyl;

R 8 is H, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, COR, SO 2 R; and

R and R′ independently are selected from C 1 -C 6 alkyl, and R may also be hydrogen.

M is selected from Tl, Pb, Bi, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Mo, Cr, Mn, Ta, V, Cu, Fe, Ru, Ni, Co, Ir, Pt, Pd, Rh, Re, Os, Ag and Au;

R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 8 are as defined above and, if substituted, the substituent is selected from halogen, C 1 -C 12 alkoxy, C 1 -C 12 alkylthio, benzoyl substituted by C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or halogen, benzoyloxy substituted by C 1 -C 4 alkyl or C 1 -C 4 alkoxy or halogen, phenyl, phenyloxy, C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyl, C 3 -C 12 cycloalkyloxy, or from the residues COR, OCOR, COOR, CONHR, CONRR′, SO 2 R, SO 3 R, SO 2 NHR, SO 2 NRR′, SiRR′R″, PORR′, PO(OR)R′, PO(OR) 2 , CN, NO 2 , NHR, NRR′, NH—NHR, NH—NRR′,

where R, R′ and R″ independently are selected from C 1 -C 12 alkyl, C 1 -C 6 haloalkyl, phenyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl; and R may also be hydrogen.

5. Compound according to claim 1 , wherein L is selected from the ligands:

two substituents R 6 , R 7 , R 8 , and R 9 , which are adjacent to each other, together form a group

wherein R 205 , R 206 , R 207 and R 208 are independently of each other H, or C 1 -C 8 alkyl,

the ring A represents an optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl group; or the ring A may be taken with the pyridyl group binding to the ring A to form a ring; the alkyl group, alkenyl group, alkynyl group, aryl group, heteroaryl group, alkoxy group, alkylthio group, acyl group, and alkyloxycarbonyl group represented by R 6 , R 7 , R 8 , and R 9 may be substituted;

R 27 is C 1 -C 24 alkyl, C 6 -C 18 aryl, or C 7 -C 18 aralkyl;

A 12 is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, hydroxy, mercapto, amino, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 1 -C 4 perfluoroalkyl, C 1 -C 4 alkoxy, —O—C 1 -C 4 perfluoroalkyl, —S—C 1 -C 4 alkyl, a group —(CH 2 ) r X 20 , wherein r is 1, or 2, X 20 is halogen, hydroxy, cyano, —O—C 1 -C 4 alkyl, di(C 1 -C 4 alkyl)amino, —CO 2 X 21 , wherein X 21 is H, or C 1 -C 4 alkyl; —CH═CHCO 2 X 22 , wherein X 22 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; —CH(O), —SO 2 X 23 , —SOX 23 , —NC(O)X 23 , —NSO 2 X 23 , —NHX 23 , —N(X 23 ) 2 , wherein X 23 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl; tri(C 1 -C 4 alkyl)siloxanyl, —O—C 6 -C 10 aryl, cyclohexyl, C 6 -C 10 aryl, or C 6 -C 10 perfluoroaryl, and

A 13 is hydrogen, nitro, cyano, C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl, C 1 -C 4 perfluoroalkyl, —O—C 1 -C 4 perfluoroalkyl, tri(C 1 -C 4 alkyl)silanyl, or C 6 -C 10 aryl.

6. Compound of claim 1 , wherein n is an integer 1,

M is Co, Fe, Ir or Rh, and m is 2, or

M is Ni, Rh, Ru, Pd or Pt, and m is 1,

R 1 , R 2 independently are selected from H, unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 8 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted phenyl, halogen, C 1 -C 8 alkoxy, COR, COOR, SO 2 R, CN, NHR and NRR′;

or the neighbouring residues R 1 and R 2 form an organic bridging group completing, together with the carbon atoms they are bonding to, an annellated phenyl ring, which optionally may be substituted;

R 5 , R 6 independently are unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 8 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 8 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted phenyl;

R 4 is as defined for R 5 or is hydrogen;

R 3 is unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 8 alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted C 2 -C 8 alkenyl, unsubstituted or substituted phenyl; and

any substituent, if present, is selected from halogen, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, C 1 -C 8 alkoxy, phenyl, phenyloxy, COR, OCOR, COOR, SO 2 R, CN, NHR, NRR′; and

R and R′ independently are selected from C 1 -C 6 alkyl, and R may also be hydrogen;

R 8 is H, SO 2 —R 11 , CO—R 11 , where R 11 is C 1 -C 12 alkyl, C 1 -C 12 haloalkyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted by halogen.

7. An organic electronic device comprising an emitting layer wherein the emitting layer comprises a compound according to claim 1 .

8. The device of claim 7 , further comprising a hole transport layer selected from polyvinyl-carbazol, N, N′-diphenyl-N, N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diamine (TPD), 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC), N,N′-bis(4-methylphenyl)-N,N′-bis(4-ethylphenyl)-[1,1′-(3,3′-dimethyl)biphenyl]4,4′-diamine (ETPD), tetrakis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N,N′,N′-2,5-phenylenediamine (PDA), a-phenyl-4-N,N-diphenylaminostyrene (TPS), p-(diethylamino)benzaldehydediphenylhydrazone (DEH), triphenylamine (TPA), bis[4-(N,N-diethylamino)-2-methylphenyl](4-methylphenyl)methane (MPMP), 1-phenyl-3-[p-(diethylamino)styryl]-5-[p-(diethylamino)phenyl]pyrazoline (PPR or DEASP), 1,2-trans-bis (9H-carbazol-9-yl)cyclobutane (DCZB), N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis (4-methylphenyl)-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine (TTB), 4,4′-N,N-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP), N,N-dicarbazoyl-1,4-dimethene-benzene (DCB), porphyrinic compounds, and combinations thereof.

9. A compound of formula (III) or tautomeric forms thereof,

is a bidentate C,N-binding ligand, CyC and CyN are interlinked by a chemical bond,

n is 1,

M is Ir and m is 2 or

M is Pt and m is 1; and

wherein the moiety

n is an integer 1,

M is Co, Fe, Ir, or Rh, and

m is 2, or

M is Ni, Rh, Ru, Pd, or Pt, and

m is 1,

LDH is a bidentate ligand of the formula II

wherein

W is selected from O, S, NR 4 , CR 5 R 6 ,

X is N or CH,

Y is selected from O, S, NR 8 ;

16. An organic electronic device comprising an emitting layer wherein the emitting layer comprises a compound according to claim 11 .

17. The organic electronic device according to claim 16 , which is an organic light emitting diode.

18. The device of claim 17 , further comprising a hole transport layer selected from the group consisting of polyvinyl-carbazol, N, N′-diphenyl-N, N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-4,4′-diamine (TPD), 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC), N,N′-bis(4-methylphenyl)-N,N′-bis(4-ethylphenyl)-[1,1′-(3,3′-dimethyl)biphenyl]4,4′-diamine (ETPD), tetrakis-(3-methylphenyl)-N,N,N′,N′-2,5-phenylenediamine (PDA), a-phenyl-4-N,N-diphenylaminostyrene (TPS), p-(diethylamino)benzaldehydediphenylhydrazone (DEH), triphenylamine (TPA), bis[4-(N,N-diethylamino)-2-methylphenyl](4-methylphenyl)methane (MPMP), 1-phenyl-3-[p-(diethylamino)styryl]-5-4)-(diethylamino)phenyllpyrazoline (PPR or DEASP), 1,2-trans-bis (9H-carbazol-9-yl)cyclobutane (DCZB), N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis (4-methylphenyl)-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine (TTB), 4,4′-N,N-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP), N,N-dicarbazoyl-1,4-dimethene-benzene (DCB), porphyrinic compounds, and combinations thereof.

19. A stationary display or a mobile display comprising the organic light emitting diode according to claim 17 .

20. A method of using the compound according to claim 11 in an electronic device comprising:

adding the compound according to claim 11 in an emitting layer in the electronic device.
