Abstract

An electrical connector for transmitting data signals between the insulated conductors of a first data cable and corresponding insulated conductors of a second data cable, including a socket shaped to at least partially receive a plug of said first data cable; a plurality of insulation displacement contact slots shaped to receive end sections of the conductors of the second data cable; a plurality of electrically conductive contacts including resiliently compressible spring finger contacts extending into the socket for electrical connection with corresponding conductors of the first cable; insulation displacement contacts seated in corresponding insulation displacement contact slots for effecting electrical connection with corresponding conductors of the second data cable; and mid sections extending therebetween; and a plurality of capacitive plates coupled to respective ones of said mid sections of the contacts by electrically conductive stems, wherein the capacitive plates are arranged side by side and extend in a substantially common direction.

Claims (25)

1. An electrical connector for transmitting data signals between the insulated conductors of a first data cable and corresponding insulated conductors of a second data cable, comprising:

(a) a socket shaped to at least partially receive a plug of said first data cable;

(b) a plurality of insulation displacement contact slots shaped to receive end sections of the conductors of the second data cable;

(c) a plurality of electrically conductive contacts including resiliently compressible spring finger contacts extending into the socket for electrical connection with corresponding conductors of the first cable; insulation displacement contacts seated in corresponding insulation displacement contact slots for effecting electrical connection with corresponding conductors of the second data cable; and mid sections extending therebetween; and

(d) a plurality of capacitive plates coupled to respective ones of said mid sections of the contacts by electrically conductive stems,

wherein the capacitive plates are arranged side by side and extend in a substantially common direction.

2. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the capacitive plates are coupled to respective ones of said mid sections of the contacts at a common location.

3. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the relative size of adjacent the capacitive plates induces a predetermined amount of capacitive coupling between adjacent contacts in the connector.

4. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area between adjacent capacitive plates induces a predetermined amount of capacitive coupling between adjacent contacts in the connector.

5. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein said predetermined amount of capacitive coupling compensates for capacitive coupling in said plug of the first cable.

6. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein said predetermined amount of capacitive coupling compensates for capacitive coupling in said plug of the first cable and capacitive coupling in the in the contacts of the connector.

7. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to first and second contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is said plates is substantially 3.93 mm 2 .

8. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to first and third contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 1.94 mm 2 .

9. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to third and fifth contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 4.64 mm 2 .

10. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to fifth and fourth contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 15.86 mm 2 .

11. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to fourth and sixth contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 4.64 mm 2 .

12. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to sixth and eighth contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 5.78 mm 2 .

13. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the overlapping area of capacitive plates coupled to seventh and eight contacts (as per the T568A wiring standard) is substantially 6.81 mm 2 .

14. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein said mid sections of the contacts lie generally in a common plane.

15. The electrical connector claimed in claim 14 , wherein the stems extend in a substantially normal direction to said common plane.

16. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the stems extend substantially one millimeter away from respective mid sections of the contacts.

17. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein the spring finger contacts are coupled to respective mid sections by elbows such that the spring finger contacts are bent away from said common plane towards the socket.

18. The electrical connector claimed in claim 17 , wherein the stems are coupled to respective mid sections of the contacts adjacent corresponding elbows.

19. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein relative movement between the mid sections of the contacts is inhibited by a fastener.

20. The electrical connector claimed in claim 1 , wherein relative capacitance between the capacitive plates is substantially unaffected by movement of the spring finger contacts.
