Abstract

A method and device for transmitting a frame of a wireless communication begins by generating a preamble of the frame that includes a short training sequence and at least one long training sequence. The at least one long training sequence includes non-zero energy on each of a plurality of subcarriers except a DC subcarrier. The at least one long training sequence corresponds to the number of antennas and applicable wireless communication standards. A matrix is defined to represent the at least one long training sequence. The preamble is compatible with legacy and current standards. A channel is defined with a set of sub carriers to transmit the frame.

Claims (31)

1. In a wireless communication device that comprises a radio coupled to a plurality of antennas, the radio comprising:

circuitry configured to determine at least one first training sequence according to a number of the antennas for transmitting a frame, wherein the circuitry is configured to derive a matrix for the at least one first training sequence in which a size of the matrix is determined and in which the size of the matrix corresponds to the number of antennas;

the circuitry configured to generate a preamble for the frame in which the preamble comprises a second training sequence and the at least one first training sequence; and

the circuitry configured to transmit the preamble with the frame using the number of antennas.

2. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to determine a type of the preamble, and wherein the type corresponds to a protocol standard.

3. The radio according to claim 2 , wherein the protocol standard comprises a wireless communication standard.

4. The radio according to claim 2 , wherein the protocol standard comprises a legacy wireless communication standard.

5. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to generate a legacy set up information field.

6. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to generate a remaining set up information field.

7. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to determine whether a legacy device is receiving the frame.

8. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to insert a signal field into the preamble.

9. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to generate a legacy set up information field in the preamble.

10. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to determine a type of the preamble.

11. The radio according to claim 10 , wherein the type corresponds to a wireless communication protocol standard.

12. The radio according to claim 11 , wherein the wireless communication protocol standard comprises a wireless digital communication protocol standard.

13. The radio according to claim 11 , wherein the wireless communication protocol standard comprises a wireless local area network communication protocol standard.

14. The radio according to claim 11 , wherein the wireless communication protocol standard comprises IEEE 802.11n standard.

15. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication.

16. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless communication.

17. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports advanced mobile phone services (AMPS) or digital AMPS.

18. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports global system for mobile communications (GSM) wireless communication.

19. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communication.

20. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports Bluetooth wireless communication.

21. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio supports one or more of the following types of wireless communication: IEEE 802.11a communication, IEEE 802.11b communication and 802.11g communication.

22. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio comprises a multi-mode radio.

23. The radio according to claim 22 , wherein the radio supports a plurality of modulation types.

24. The radio according to claim 22 , wherein the radio supports a plurality of channel bandwidths.

25. The radio according to claim 22 , wherein the radio supports a plurality of bit rates.

26. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio comprises a plurality of radio frequency (RF) transmitters and a plurality of RF receivers.

27. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the radio is configured to communicate in a wireless local area network.

28. The radio according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication device is a cellular communication device.
