Abstract

Alkylate compositions comprising a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent and a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent, the weight percentages being based on the total weight of all components in the alkylate composition. The invention is also to processes for making such alkylate compositions and to processes for forming stable liquid butylaryl phosphite compositions from such alkylate compositions.

Claims (52)

1 . An alkylate composition comprising:

a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent; and

a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent,

the weight percentages being based on total weight of alkylphenols in the alkylate composition.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the ratio of monobutylphenol to dibutylphenol ranges from 7:1 to 1:2.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein at least 60 weight percent of the monobutyl substituents are substituted with butyl groups in the para-position.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein at least 5 weight percent of the dibutyl substituents are substituted with butyl groups in the ortho-position and the para-position.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the monobutylphenols and dibutylphenols, combined, are present in an amount greater than 90 weight percent, based on the total amount of all phenols in the composition.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein at least 90 weight percent of the butyl substituents are tert-butyl.

7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein at least 90 weight percent of the total phenols of the alkylate composition are substituted with one or more tert-butyl groups.

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the monobutylphenol is 4-tert-butylphenol and the dibutylphenol is 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol.

9 . The composition of claim 8 , wherein the weight ratio of 4-tert-butylphenol to 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol ranges from 7:1 to 1:2.

10 . The composition of claim 8 , wherein the 4-tert-butylphenol is present in an amount ranging from 60 weight percent to 85 weight percent and the 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol is present in an amount ranging from 10 weight percent to 41 weight percent.

11 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein alkylate composition is substantially free of colored impurities.

12 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkylate composition contains less than 10 weight parts per million tri-alkylaryl compounds.

13 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkylate composition contains less than 10 weight percent residual non-butylated phenols.

14 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkylate composition is substantially free of non-butyl substituted phenols.

15 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkylate composition is substantially free of non-alkylaryl compounds.

16 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the alkylate composition is substantially free of nonylated phenols.

17 . A method for forming an alkylate composition, the method comprising:

contacting one or more butylenes with a phenol at a molar ratio ranging from 1:1 to 6:1 in the presence of a catalyst and under conditions effective to form the alkylate composition.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the resultant alkylate composition comprises

a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent; and

a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the ratio of monobutylphenol to dibutylphenol ranges from 7:1 to 1:2.

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the catalyst is selected from the group consisting of acid clay catalyst, cationic ion exchange resins, Brönsted acids, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, Lewis acids, BF 3 , trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid), and phosphotungstic acid.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the catalyst is anhydrous.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the catalyst introduces substantially no water into the alkylate composition.

23 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the resultant alkylate composition contains less than 10 weight parts per million tri-alkylaryl compounds.

24 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the resultant alkylate composition contains less than 10 weight percent residual non-butylated phenols.

25 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the resultant alkylate composition is substantially colorless.

26 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the resultant alkylate composition is not further processed to remove colored impurities.

27 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the contacting occurs at internal temperatures ranging from 60° C. to 200° C. and pressures ranging from 0.2 atmospheres to 10 atmospheres.

28 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising selecting the composition of the butylenes so as to produce a target alkylate composition.

29 . A method for forming a phosphite composition, the method comprising:

contacting one or more amylenes with a phenol at a molar ratio ranging from 1:1 to 6:1 in the presence of a catalyst and under conditions effective to form an alkylate composition comprising

a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent; and

a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent;

wherein the weight percentages are based on the total weight of all components in the alkylate composition; and

reacting a phosphorus polyhalide with the alkylate composition to produce the phosphite composition.

30 . The method of claim 29 , wherein the phosphite composition comprises at least two of

a tris(dibutylaryl) phosphite;

a tris(monobutylaryl) phosphite;

a bis(dibutylaryl)monobutylaryl phosphite; and

a bis(monobutylaryl)dibutylaryl phosphite,

wherein the phosphite composition is a liquid at ambient conditions.

A phosphite composition formed by reacting a phosphorus polyhalide with an alkylate composition comprising a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent; and a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent, the weight percentages being based on the total weight of all components in the alkylate composition.

32 . The composition of claim 31 , wherein the phosphite composition has a viscosity ranging from 500 cSt to 50,000 cSt at 30° C.

33 . A polymeric composition comprising:

a polymeric resin; and

a phosphite composition formed by reacting a phosphorus polyhalide with an alkylate composition comprising a monobutylphenol in an amount ranging from 50 weight percent to 99 weight percent; and a dibutylphenol in an amount ranging from 1 weight percent to 50 weight percent, the weight percentages being based on the total weight of all components in the alkylate composition.

34 . The polymeric composition of claim 33 , wherein the polymeric composition is suitable for use in food related applications.
