Abstract

An apparatus for manipulating a medical device is formed of at least three coupled movable blades which are disposed about a reference circle to form an aperture whose size may be varied. The aperture capable of being sized to contain a medical device. Each blade is in communication with an actuation device which is capable of moving the blade to alter the size of the aperture. Each blade includes a single radial point which a) lies on the circumference of the reference circle prior to movement of the blade, and b) may be moved only along a radius of the reference circle on movement of the blade.

Claims (22)

1. A crimping apparatus for reducing the size of a stent, the crimping apparatus comprising:

a plurality of crimping devices arranged sequentially, each crimping device including a plurality of movable blades collectively arranged to form an iris defining an aperture of the crimping apparatus having a size which may be varied;

the plurality of movable blades of a first crimping device defining a first region of the aperture having a diameter and the plurality of movable blades of a second crimping device defining a second region of the aperture having a diameter different from the diameter of the first region; and

an actuator configured to actuate the plurality of movable blades to vary the size of the aperture.

2. The crimping apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the aperture includes a third region defined by a plurality of movable blades of a third crimping device having a diameter different from the diameter of the second region.

3. The crimping apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the diameters of the first and third regions are the same.

4. The crimping apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the second region is positioned between the first region and the third region.

5. The crimping apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the diameter of the second region is greater than the diameters of the first and third regions.

6. The crimping apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the diameter of the second region is less than the diameters of the first and third regions.

7. The crimping apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the first and third regions of the aperture are configured to reduce first and second end portions of a stent to a diameter less than a diameter of a central portion of the stent.

8. The crimping apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the diameter of the first region of the aperture is varied independent of the diameter of the second region of the aperture.

9. The crimping apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the diameter of the second region is varied independent of the diameters of the first and third regions of the aperture.

10. The crimping apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the diameter of the second region is varied simultaneously with the diameters of the first and third regions of the aperture.

11. A system for crimping a stent onto a balloon of a balloon catheter, the system comprising:

a plurality of crimping devices including a first crimping device, a second crimping device and a third crimping device arranged sequentially, each crimping device including a plurality of movable blades collectively arranged to form an iris defining an aperture of the crimping apparatus having a size which may be varied by actuating the plurality of movable blades;

the first crimping device including a first subset of the plurality of movable blades defining a first region of the aperture having a diameter, the second crimping device including a second subset of the plurality of movable blades defining a second region of the aperture having a diameter, and the third crimping device including a third subset of the plurality of movable blades defining a third region of the aperture having a diameter greater than the diameters of the first and second regions, the third region positioned between the first region and the second region; and

an actuator configured to actuate the plurality of movable blades to vary the size of the aperture.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first and third regions of the aperture are configured to reduce first and second end portions of a stent to a diameter less than a diameter of a central portion of the stent.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the diameter of the second region is varied independent of the diameters of the first and third regions of the aperture.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second subset of movable blades is actuatable independent of the first and third subsets of movable blades.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the diameter of the second region is varied simultaneously with the diameters of the first and third regions of the aperture.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the second subset of movable blades is actuatable independent of the first and third subsets of movable blades.
