Abstract

An arrangement for use in a utility meter includes a temperature sensor, a memory device, a communication circuit, and a processing circuit. The processing circuit is operably coupled to receive information representative of temperature measurements from the temperature sensor. The processing circuit is configured to store first temperature information associated with a first time period in a first data record in the memory device, the first temperature information derived from one or more of the temperature measurements. The processing circuit is further configured to store subsequent temperature information associated with corresponding subsequent time periods in corresponding other data records in the memory device. The processing circuit is also configure to periodically cause the communication circuit to communicate information representative of the first temperature information and the subsequent temperature information to an external device.

Claims (41)

1 . An arrangement for use in a utility meter, comprising:

a temperature sensor;

a memory device;

a communication circuit;

a processing circuit operably coupled to receive information representative of temperature measurements from the temperature sensor, the processing circuit configured to:

store first temperature information associated with a first time period in a first data record in the memory device, the first temperature information derived from one or more of the temperature measurements;

store subsequent temperature information associated with corresponding subsequent time periods in corresponding other data records in the memory device;

periodically cause the communication circuit to communicate information representative of the first temperature information and the subsequent temperature information to an external device.

2 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the information communicated by the communication circuit comprises information representative of the first data record and each of the corresponding other data records.

3 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to generate a value based on the first temperature information and the subsequent temperature information, and wherein the information communicated by the communication circuit comprises the value.

4 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to

store time and date data in the memory;

store the first data records and other data records such that each data record is stored at an address within the memory that corresponds to a time differential between a start of the corresponding time period and the stared time and date data.

5 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

generate a change rate value representative of a temperature change over two or more time periods; and

generate an alarm signal based on an evaluation of the generated change rate value.

6 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the first temperature information constitutes a data representation of a single temperature measurement within the first time period.

7 . The arrangement of claim 1 , further comprising at least a second temperature sensor disposed within the meter, wherein the temperature sensor and the second temperature sensor are spaced apart such that the temperature sensor is more closely located than the second temperature sensor to a first meter component.

8 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the first meter component comprises the meter blades.

9 . The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to:

evaluate filtered temperature information based on the subsequent temperature information from a plurality of subsequent time periods; and

adjust a metering circuit parameter based on the evaluation of the filtered temperature information.

10 . The arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to adjust a metering circuit clock based on the evaluation of the filtered temperature information.

11 . The arrangement of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuit is further configured to adjust energy consumption-related values based on the evaluation of the filtered temperature information.

12 . An arrangement, comprising:

a plurality of electricity meters, each electricity meter including a memory storing temperature information regarding the electricity meter, and a communication device;

a control station configured to receive temperature information from the plurality of electricity meters, the control station further configured to process the temperature information from the plurality of electricity meters to generate at least one diagnostic value.

13 . The arrangement of claim 11 , wherein the diagnostic value includes information identifying one or more of the plurality of electricity meters to be scheduled for service.

14 . The arrangement of claim 11 , wherein the diagnostic value includes a value representative of a predicted meter failure rate.

15 . The arrangement of claim 11 , wherein the control station is further configured to:

evaluate filtered temperature information based on temperature information from each meter for a plurality of time periods; and

determine an adjustment of a metering circuit parameter for at least a first meter, based on the evaluation of the filtered temperature information;

communicate a signal to the first meter, the signal including information representative of the determined adjustment.

16 . The arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the control station processing circuit is further configured to determine the adjustment such that the adjustment is an adjustment of a metering circuit clock of the first meter.

17 . The arrangement of claim 15 , wherein the control station processing circuit is further configured to determine the adjustment such that the adjustment is an adjustment of an energy consumption calculation circuit of the first meter.

18 . An arrangement for use in a utility meter, comprising:

a temperature sensor;

a memory device operably attached to the meter using a plug;

a processing circuit operably coupled to receive information representative of temperature measurements from the temperature sensor, the processing circuit configured to:

store first temperature information associated with a first time period in a first data record in the memory device, the first temperature information derived from one or more of the temperature measurements; and

store subsequent temperature information associated with corresponding subsequent time periods in corresponding other data records in the memory device.
