Printer having relative arcuately moveable printhead, capper and purger
View Patent ↗A printer is provided having a pagewidth printhead having a plurality of ejection nozzles located along the pagewidth, a capping mechanism having a pagewidth capping member, a first mechanism for moving the printhead in a first arc between first, second and third positions, and a second mechanism for moving the capping member in a second arc between capping and non-capping positions relative to the printhead. The capping member, in the capping position, caps the nozzles when the printhead is in the second position and permits purging of material from the nozzles when the printhead is in the third position.
1. A printer comprising:
a pagewidth printhead having a plurality of ejection nozzles located along the pagewidth;
a capping mechanism having a pagewidth capping member;
a first mechanism for moving the printhead in a first arc between first, second and third positions; and
a second mechanism for moving the capping member in a second arc between capping and non-capping positions relative to the printhead, the capping member, in the capping position, capping the nozzles when the printhead is in the second position and permitting purging of material from the nozzles when the printhead is in the third position.
2. A printer as claimed in claim 1 wherein the capping member when in the non-capping position is located below the printhead and the capping member is raised in the second arc from the non-capping position to the capping position.
3. A printer as claimed in claim 1 wherein the capping member comprises an elastomeric material lip portion and a cavity surrounded by the lip portion, the lip portion being peripherally configured to surround the nozzles in the capping position.
4. A printer as claimed in claim 3 wherein the capping member is a one-piece member.
5. A printer as claimed in claim 1 wherein the capping mechanism further has purging means associated with the capping member, the purging means being arranged to receive the material purged from the nozzles when in the capping position.
