Abstract

This invention directs to an optical disc assembly configured to receive an analyte which can be detected by a standard optical disc reader or an optical disc reader modified therefrom. The optical disc assembly may preferably be designed so that the optical disc reader can track the disc and detect the analyte concurrently and discriminably. The optical disc assembly contains or encodes optically readable features which are trackable by the optical disc reader and which have encoded speed information enabling the optical disc reader to rotate the optical disc assembly at a determinable speed. The optical disc assembly also includes an analyte section capable of receiving the analyte that can be detected by the optical disc reader.

Claims (26)

1. An optical bio-disc comprising:

tracking structures that are optically trackable by a laser;

an analyte section configured to receive an analyte; and

a cut-away area of the optical disc positioned proximate to the analyte section, wherein the cut-away area is configured to permit the laser to detect the analyte in the analyte section and resume tracking of the tracking structures.

2. The optical bio-disc of claim 1 , wherein the analyte comprises one or more of a biological specimen, a chemical specimen, and a biochemical specimen.

3. The optical bio-disc of claim 1 , wherein the cut-away area lacks tracking structures.

4. The optical bio-disc of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first layer that comprises the tracking structures; and

a second layer, wherein the analyte section includes a first chamber which is positioned between the first layer and the second layer and which is capable of receiving the analyte.

5. The optical bio-disc of claim 4 , further comprising a reflective layer that covers at least some of the tracking structures, wherein the reflective layer is configured to reflect an incident laser with a first reflectivity.

6. The optical bio-disc of claim 5 , wherein the reflective layer covers at least some of the cut-away area, and wherein portions of the reflective layer that cover at least some of the cut-away area have a second reflectivity different than the first reflectivity.

7. The optical bio-disc of claim 5 , wherein the reflective layer does not cover the cut-away area.

8. The optical bio-disc of claim 4 , wherein the first layer is configured to focus an incident laser on the analyte section and the tracking structures.

9. The optical bio-disc of claim 4 , wherein the first layer includes a first surface that comprises the tracking structures, and wherein the first surface is proximate to the first chamber such that the tracking structures and the first chamber are both positioned within a focusing range of the laser.

10. The optical bio-disc of claim 9 , wherein the analyte section includes a second surface which is located within 15 micrometers of the first surface.

11. The optical bio-disc of claim 4 , further comprising a third layer, wherein the third layer is configured to focus an incident laser on the analyte section and the tracking structures.

12. A method for detecting an investigational structure supported in an analyte section of an optical bio-disc, the method comprising:

tracking a laser on an optical bio-disc based at least in part on laser light reflected by one or more tracking structures of the optical bio-disc;

detecting an analyte section based at least in part on laser light reflected through a cut-away section of the optical bio-disc; and

resuming tracking of the laser on the optical bio-disc based at least in part on laser light reflected by the one or more tracking structures.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the cut-away section of the optical bio-disc does not comprise tracking structures.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

detecting the analyte section based at least in part on detecting reflected laser light different than the laser light reflected by the one or more tracking structures; and

focusing the laser on the analyte section, wherein a position of the analyte section corresponds to a position of the cut-away section.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

detecting an analyte in the analyte section based at least in part on the laser light reflected through the cut-away section.
