Abstract

Methods of using an optical device capable of distributing the optical power presented at an input to specified ratios in two output ports. The devices and methods described herein have the ability to broaden the range of wavelengths over which the splitting ratio is even, or substantially even. Methods involve achieving a desired splitting ratio over a broad or ultra-broad wavelength range.

Claims (16)

1. A method of distributing input optical power, comprising:

mixing the input optical power to provide a 0 dB splitting ratio for light of at least one polarization and one wavelength, λ 0 at two first outputs of optical power, and to provide a splitting ratio that is less than 1 dB through a first continuous range of wavelengths that includes λ 0 at the two first outputs of optical power; and

mixing two inputs of optical power from the two first outputs of optical power to provide a splitting ratio greater than 16 dB for light of at least one polarization at wavelength λ 0 at two second outputs of optical power with a power splitting tolerance of ±1 dB or less over an ultra-broad wavelength range of about 1.25μ, to about 1.65μ.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting the two first outputs of optical power to the two inputs of optical power, respectively, by optical paths having different lengths.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the difference between the two optical path lengths provides a splitting ratio that is less than 1 dB over a first continuous range of wavelengths.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the difference between the two optical path lengths provides a splitting ratio that is less than 1 dB over a second continuous range of wavelengths; the second continuous range of wavelengths being broader than the first continuous range of wavelengths.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the difference between the two optical path lengths is about equal to a value that is within a target range of wavelengths.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two second outputs of optical power have an even splitting ratio over a wavelength range of about 500 nm or more.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein one mixing act comprises symmetric mixing and the other mixing act comprises asymmetric mixing.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the two second outputs of optical power have a power splitting tolerance of ±0.75 dB or less over an ultra-broad wavelength range of about 1.25μ to about 1.65μ.

9. A method of evenly splitting input optical power over a wavelength range of about 100 nm or more, comprising:

mixing the input optical power to provide a 0 dB splitting ratio for light of at least one polarization and one wavelength, λ 0 at two first outputs of optical power, and to provide a splitting ratio that is less than 1 dB through a first continuous range of wavelengths that includes λ 0 at the two first outputs of optical power; and

mixing two inputs of optical power from the two first outputs of optical power to provide a splitting ratio greater than 16 dB for light of at least one polarization at wavelength λ 0 at two second outputs of optical power with an even splitting ratio over a wavelength range of about 100 nm or more.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the even splitting ratio is obtained over a wavelength range from about 1260 nm to about 1625 nm.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the even splitting ratio is 50-50.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the even splitting ratio is other than 50-50.
