Abstract

A surgical fastening system for implantable devices is disclosed. The implantable device may contain a plurality of fasteners in pre-deployment position, may have a housing fitted over or around it which contains a plurality of fasteners in pre-deployment position, or may be a part of a two-part system into which it fits. Accordingly, the present invention also encompasses a deployment system or tool that optionally positions the implantable device, and which causes the fasteners to move into post-deployment position. The fasteners may be staples, metal loops, coils, springs or hooks formed of biocompatible materials, including shape memory alloys such as NiTi.

Claims (30)

1. An implantable injection port assembly, comprising:

an injection port including a fluid reservoir below a septum capable of penetration by a needle from above the injection port;

a tubing connector extending outward from the injection port in fluid communication with the reservoir;

a baseplate to which the injection port is mounted, the baseplate having a plurality of apertures; and

a fastener pivotally attached to the baseplate and capable of pivoting through an arc from an undeployed position not projecting below the baseplate to a deployed position below the baseplate, such that a tip of the fastener upon deployment projects downward through one of the apertures to pierce tissue and then curves upward to be received in another of the apertures such that the arc traveled by the fastener forms a closed loop through the tissue and enables a user to attach the port assembly to the tissue without sutures.

2. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the assembly further comprises a rotating disc for rotating the fastener from the undeployed position to the deployed position.

3. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein there are a plurality of the fasteners attached to the baseplate and mounted to pivot from undeployed positions to deployed positions, and wherein the rotating disc simultaneously pivots the fasteners from their undeployed positions to their deployed positions.

4. The assembly of claim 2 , wherein the rotating disc rotates about a vertical axis through the baseplate, and the fastener pivots about a radial axis.

5. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the fastener comprises a curved hook whose sharp tip rotates through the arc from the one baseplate aperture to the other.

6. The assembly of claim 1 , wherein the assembly includes a locking tab to lock the fastener in its deployed position.

7. An implantable injection port assembly, comprising:

an injection port including a fluid reservoir below a septum capable of penetration by a needle from above the injection port;

a tubing connector extending outward from the injection port in fluid communication with the reservoir;

a baseplate to which the injection port mounts having a plurality of apertures; and

a plurality of fasteners pivotally attached to the baseplate and mounted to pivot from an undeployed position not projecting below the baseplate to a deployed position below the baseplate, such that a tip of each fastener upon deployment projects downward through one of the apertures to pierce tissue and then curves upward to be received in another of the apertures such that the fasteners enables a user to attach the port assembly to tissue without sutures.

8. The assembly of claim 7 , wherein the assembly further comprises a rotating disc for rotating the fasteners from their undeployed positions to their deployed positions.

9. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the rotating disc simultaneously pivots the fasteners from their undeployed positions to their deployed positions.

10. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the rotating disc rotates about a vertical axis through the baseplate, and the fasteners pivot about radial axes.

11. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the fasteners comprises curved hooks having sharp tips that rotates through an arc from the one baseplate aperture to the other.

12. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein the assembly includes a locking tab to lock the fasteners in their deployed positions.

13. An implantable injection port assembly, comprising:

an injection port including a fluid reservoir below a septum capable of penetration by a needle from above the injection port;

a tubing connector extending outward from the injection port in fluid communication with the reservoir;

a baseplate to which the injection port mounts;

a plurality of fasteners pivotally attached to the baseplate and mounted to pivot from an undeployed position not projecting below the baseplate to a deployed position that forms a closed loop below the baseplate; and

a rotating member mounted for rotation relative to the baseplate to simultaneously pivot the fasteners from their undeployed positions to their deployed positions and enable a user to attach the port assembly to tissue below the baseplate without sutures.

14. The assembly of claim 13 , wherein the rotating member rotates about a vertical axis through the baseplate, and the fasteners pivot about radial axes.

15. The assembly of claim 13 , wherein the fasteners comprises curved hooks having sharp tips that rotates through an arc below the baseplate to form the closed loops.

16. The assembly of claim 13 , wherein the assembly includes a locking tab to lock the fasteners in their deployed positions.

17. The assembly of claim 13 , wherein the baseplate has a plurality of apertures, and each fastener projects downward through one of the apertures below the baseplate to pierce tissue and curves upward to be received in another of the apertures to form the closed loops.
