Abstract

In various embodiments, techniques are provided to determine channel characteristics of various communication systems such as OFDM systems or systems using a plurality of transmit antennas by using various sets of training symbols that produce zero cross-correlation energy. Channel communication can accordingly be simplified as the zero cross-correlation property allows for channel estimation without a matrix inversion.

Claims (30)

1. A method for communicating, comprising:

transmitting via a first transmitter a set of first training symbols using a first communication channel; and

transmitting via a second transmitter a plurality of sets of second training symbols using a second communication channel;

wherein the plurality of sets of second training symbols is based on the set of first training symbols and a cross-correlation estimate between the first set of training symbols and one of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is zero, where a channel estimation is performed to estimate the first channel based on the set of the first training symbols, without performing a matrix inversion.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of training symbols is transmitted using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each cross-correlation estimate between the first set of training symbols and every set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is zero.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein each cross-correlation estimate between every two sets of training symbols of the plurality of second training symbols is zero.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein one set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is identical to the set of first training symbols with a phase shift.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein every set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is identical to the set of first training symbols with a respective phase shift.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the set of first training symbols;

receiving one of the plurality of sets of second training symbols; and

characterizing two or more communication channels based on the set of first training symbols and the one set of second training symbols.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the characterizing the two or more communication channels does not use a matrix inversion.

9. A method of communicating, comprising:

receiving via a first receiver a set of first training symbols;

receiving via a second receiver a plurality of sets of second training symbols; and

characterizing two or more communication channels based on the set of first training symbols and the plurality of sets of second training symbols;

wherein a cross-correlation estimate between the set of first training symbols and one of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is zero, where a channel estimation is performed to estimate the first channel based on the set of the first training symbols, without performing a matrix inversion.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the set of first training symbols is transmitted using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technique.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein each cross-correlation estimate between the set of first training symbols and every set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is zero.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein each cross-correlation estimate between every two sets of training symbols of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is zero.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein one set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is identical to the set of first training symbols with a phase shift.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein every set of the plurality of sets of second training symbols is identical to the set of first training symbols with a respective phase shift.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the characterizing two or more communication channels does not use a matrix inversion.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the set of first training symbols is transmitted using a first transmit device and the plurality of sets of second training symbols is transmitted using a second transmitting device.

17. An apparatus for communicating, comprising:

a receive device having a receive antenna that receives a set of first training symbols transmitted by a first transmit device having a first transmit antenna and a set of second training symbols transmitted by a second transmit device having a second transmit antenna; and

an estimator that estimates a first channel related to the first transmit device based on the set of first training symbols;

wherein a cross-correlation estimate between the set of first training symbols and the set of second training symbols is zero, where a channel estimation is performed without performing a matrix inversion.
