Abstract

A dunnage handler is disclosed for controlling the outfeed of dunnage from a dunnage mechanism including a first handler portion configured for association with the dunnage mechanism for receiving dunnage therefrom, the first handler portion being reversibly reconfigurable between an accumulator configuration, in which the first handler portion is configured to accumulate the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism and a discharger configuration, in which the first handler portion is configured to discharge the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism.

Claims (41)

1. A dunnage system, comprising:

a dunnage mechanism configured to produce dunnage; and

a dunnage handler defining a handling area and receiving the dunnage from the dunnage mechanism into the handling area, the dunnage handler comprising a first handler portion that is reversibly reconfigurable between:

an accumulator configuration, in which a first surface of the first handler portion faces toward the handling area to accumulate therein the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism; and

a discharger configuration, in which the first surface of the first handler portion faces away from the handling area, and a second surface of the first handler portion faces toward the handling area to discharge the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism.

2. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein, in the discharger configuration, the first handler portion is configured for directing the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism in a predetermined direction and discharging the dunnage.

3. The dunnage system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second handler portion in spaced apart relationship with the first handler portion defining the handling area there between; and

a configuration changer adapted to reconfigure the dunnage handler between the accumulator configuration and the discharger configuration.

4. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the first handler portion is oriented differently in the accumulator and discharger configurations.

5. The dunnage system of claim 4 , wherein the first handler portion is configured for rotating between the accumulator and discharger configurations.

6. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage handler in the accumulator configuration has an accumulation feature extending upwardly for keeping the dunnage from falling off the dunnage handler.

7. The dunnage system of claim 6 , wherein the accumulation feature in the discharger configuration extends downwardly to allow dunnage to fall away from the handler.

8. The dunnage system of claim 6 , wherein the handler comprises a second handler portion moveably positioned relative to the accumulation feature and adapted to keep dunnage from falling off of the handler with the first handling portion in the accumulator configuration.

9. The dunnage system of claim 1 , further comprising a second handler portion in opposing position to the first handling portion, the first and second handling portions including trailing ends configured to allow dunnage to escape therefrom with the first handling portion in the discharger configuration.

10. The dunnage system of claim 9 , wherein the discharger configuration includes a discharge mouth positioned between the trailing ends, the discharge mouth adapted to discharge dunnage.

11. The dunnage system of claim 9 , wherein the discharge mouth includes a mouth gap, the accumulation of dunnage creating a pressure to increase the mouth gap and allow dunnage to escape.

12. The dunnage system of claim 1 , further comprising a second handler portion positioned in opposition to the first handler portion and adapted to guide the discharge of dunnage.

13. The dunnage system of claim 1 , further comprising a second handler portion adapted to limit the amount of dunnage that can accumulate in the handler.

14. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage handler further comprises a second handler portion positioned relative to the first handler portion to define the handling area therebetween, the size of the handling area being adjustable by relative articulating motion between the first and second handler portions with the first handler portion remaining in the accumulator configuration.

15. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage mechanism is configured to produce cross-crumpled dunnage including creased regions and the first handler portion includes a plurality of rails, wherein the rails are positioned to cause the creased regions to travel along the rails.

16. The dunnage system of claim 15 , wherein the first handler portion comprises a bottom handler portion, and further comprising a second handler portion comprising a top handler portion disposed above the bottom handler portion.

17. The dunnage system of claim 1 wherein:

the dunnage handler includes a second handler portion in a spaced apart relationship with the first handler defining the handling area therebetween

in the accumulator configuration, at least a portion of the first and the second handlers are biased towards each other; and

in the discharger configuration, the first and second handler portions define a continuous discharge path therebetween through the handling area to discharge the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism.

18. The dunnage system of claim 17 , wherein the second handler portion comprises a downwardly oriented feature and wherein the first handler comprises a feature that is upwardly oriented in the accumulator configuration and downwardly oriented in the discharger configuration.

19. The dunnage system of claim 17 , wherein the first and second handler portions each comprises a pair of parallel tracks.

20. The dunnage system of claim 17 , wherein the dunnage accumulated while the first handler portion is in the accumulator configuration is removable from the handling area while the first handler is in the accumulator configuration.

21. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the dunnage mechanism is configured to produce individual pieces of dunnage discrete from each other.

22. The dunnage system of claim 1 , wherein the first surface contacts and guides the dunnage in the accumulator configuration to accumulate the dunnage in the handling area, and a second surface of the first handler portion contacts and guides the dunnage in the discharger configuration to discharge the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism.

23. A dunnage system for controlling an outfeed of dunnage from a dunnage mechanism, comprising:

a first handler portion configured for association with the dunnage mechanism for receiving dunnage therefrom; and

a second handler portion in a spaced apart relationship with the first handler portion defining a handling area therebetween, the first handler portion being reversibly reconfigurable between:

an accumulator configuration, in which a feature of the first handler portion extends towards the second handler portion to restrict an exit path of the dunnage to accumulate the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism, and in which a first surface of the first handler portion faces toward the handling area to contact the dunnage and accumulate therein; and

a discharger configuration, in which the feature of the first handler portion extends away from the second handler portion and the first surface of the first handler portion faces away from the handling area and a second surface of the first handler portion faces toward the handling area to contact the dunnage and to discharge the dunnage received from the dunnage mechanism.

24. The dunnage system of claim 23 , wherein the discharge configuration provides a free path to discharge the dunnage.

25. The dunnage system of claim 23 , wherein the second handler is configured to move away from the first handler as dunnage accumulates in the handling area and applies pressure to the second handler.

26. A dunnage system, comprising:

a dunnage mechanism; and

the dunnage handler of claim 23 receiving the dunnage from the dunnage mechanism.
