Abstract

Transparent structures, electrochromic devices, and methods for making such structures/devices are provided. A transparent structure may include a transparent substrate having a plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures, at least one substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation and partially cover at least substantial portions of the substrate and the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures, and at least one photocatalyst configured to at least partially cover an outermost surface of the transparent structure.

Claims (22)

1. A transparent structure comprising:

a transparent substrate having a plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures that provide a rough surface on the substrate;

at least one substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation and that partially covers at least substantial portions of the substrate and the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures; and

at least one photocatalyst configured as an outermost surface of the transparent structure, wherein the outermost surface of the transparent structure is an uncovered surface.

2. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the transparent substrate comprises a glass, a polymer, or a combination thereof.

3. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures in the transparent substrate is configured to have a recessed shape.

4. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures in the transparent substrate is configured to have a raised shape.

5. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the at least one substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation comprises a metal, a near-infrared radiation absorbent, an infrared radiation reflecting material, or a combination thereof.

6. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the at least one photocatalyst comprises TiO 2 , ZnO, SnO 2 , CdS, ZrO2, V 2 O 2 , WO 3 , SrTiO 3 , or a combination thereof.

7. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the at least one photocatalyst is configured to exist in the form of protrusions on the outermost surface of the transparent structure.

8. The transparent structure of claim 1 , wherein the transparent structure further comprises at least one transparent conductive substance interposed between the substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation and the photocatalyst.

9. The transparent structure of claim 8 , wherein the at least one transparent conductive substance comprises a metal oxide, a conductive polymer, or a combination thereof.

10. An electrochromic device comprising:

a transparent substrate having a plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures that provide a rough surface on one side of the substrate;

at least one substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation and that partially covers at least substantial portions of the substrate and the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures; and

at least one photocatalyst configured as an outermost surface of the electrochromic device, wherein the outermost surface of the electrochromatic device is an uncovered surface.

11. The electrochromic device of claim 10 , wherein the electrochromic device further comprises:

a first electrode configured to at least partially cover a side of said substrate that does not have the plurality of micro- or nano-scale structures; and

at least one electrochromic material configured to at least partially cover a second electrode.

12. The electrochromic device of claim 10 , wherein the electrochromic device further comprises a pair of electrodes and at least one electrochromic material that are interposed between the substance configured to block near-infrared or infrared radiation and the photocatalyst.

13. The electrochromic device of claim 12 , wherein the pair of electrodes comprises a metal oxide, a conductive polymer, or a combination thereof.

14. The electrochromic device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one electrochromic material is one or more of vanadium pentoxide, tungsten oxide, molybdenum oxide, titanium pentoxide tungsten oxide-molybdenum oxide mixtures, niobium pentoxide, cobalt oxide, iridium oxide, and rhodium oxide.
