Abstract

A mounting block assembly for positionally adjusting machine components. The mounting block assembly comprises a mount for attachment to a framework of the machine and a component interface pivotably mounted to the mount about a pivot axis. The component interface is capable of supporting at least one component. The mounting block assembly component interface includes a slide block pivotably mounted to the mount about the pivot axis and a tie block adjustably mounted to the slide block along an adjustment axis.

Claims (35)

1. A rail structure for use in a forming machine that is adapted to form a strip of material into a desired profile, comprising:

a pair of mounting block assemblies, each including:

a mount for attachment to a framework of the machine;

a slide block pivotably mounted to said mount about a pivot axis; and

a tie block adjustably mounted to said slide block along an adjustment axis that is parallel to said pivot axis, such that said tie block translates along the adjustment axis; and

a mounting rail extending between and mounted to said tie blocks.

2. A rail structure according to claim 1 further including a tool set mounted to said mounting rail.

3. A rail structure according to claim 2 wherein said tool set includes a tooling rail and a plurality of forming elements secured thereto.

4. A rail structure according to claim 3 further including a spacer disposed between said tooling rail and said mounting rail.

5. A forming machine adapted to form a longitudinal margin of a strip of material into a desired profile, comprising:

A. a framework having an interior including a forming region through which said strip may be advanced from an upstream entrance to a downstream exit;

B. a drive mechanism disposed in the interior of said framework and operative to engage said strip and advance said strip in a downstream direction from said entrance to said exit;

C. a rail structure, comprising:

at least a pair of mounting block assemblies, each including:

a mount fastened to said framework;

a slide block pivotably mounted to said mount about a pivot axis; and

a tie block adjustably mounted to said slide block along an adjustment axis that is parallel to said pivot axis; and

a mounting rail extending between and mounted to said pair of mounting block assemblies; and

D. a plurality of forming elements supported by said rail structure to define at least one forming station that is positioned to receive said longitudinal margin and operative to contribute to forming said longitudinal margin into the desired profile as said strip is advanced through the forming region by said drive mechanism.

6. In a metal forming machine adapted to bend a longitudinal margin of a strip of metal into a desired profile, including: a framework having an interior including a forming region through which said strip may be advanced from an upstream entrance to a downstream exit; a drive mechanism disposed in the interior of said framework and operative to engage said strip and advance said strip in a downstream direction from said entrance to said exit; an elongated rail structure mounted relative to said framework and spaced laterally from said drive mechanism; and a plurality of forming elements connected to said rail structure to define at least one forming station that is positioned to receive said longitudinal margin and operative to bend said longitudinal margin as said strip is advanced through the forming region by said drive mechanism, the improvement comprising:

a plurality of mounting block assemblies disposed between said rail structure and said framework, each including:

a mount fastened to said framework;

a slide block pivotably mounted to said mount about a pivot axis; and

a tie block supporting said rail structure, said tie block being adjustably mounted to said slide block along an adjustment axis that is parallel to said pivot axis.

7. A rail structure according to claim 1 wherein said tie block includes an elongate slot parallel to said adjustment axis and said tie block is adjustably mounted to said slide block along said slot.

8. A rail structure according to claim 7 wherein said slide block includes opposed limit stops between which said tie block is adjustably positionable.

9. A rail structure according to claim 1 wherein said slide block is slidably mounted to said mount along a mount axis parallel to said pivot axis.

10. A rail structure according to claim 9 wherein said slide block is mounted to said mount by at least one threaded mounting fastener and including at least one threaded adjustment bolt extending through said slide block whereby rotation of said threaded adjustment bolt pivots said slide block about said pivot axis.

11. A rail structure according to claim 10 including a threaded slide screw extending parallel to said adjustment axis and aligned with said threaded adjustment bolt whereby rotation of said threaded slide screw adjusts said slide block along said mount axis relative to said mount.

12. A rail structure according to claim 11 wherein said threaded mounting fastener extends through a slot formed through said slide block and an end portion of said threaded slide screw confronts a shank of said threaded mounting fastener.

13. A rail structure according to claim 9 wherein said mount includes a tapered surface facing said slide block that provides clearance for pivoting said slide block.

14. A rail structure according to claim 13 wherein said tapered surface is oriented at an acute angle relative to an upper surface of said mount.

15. A rail structure according to claim 9 wherein said slide block includes a tapered surface facing said mount that provides clearance for pivoting said slide block.

16. A rail structure according to claim 15 wherein said tapered surface is oriented at an obtuse angle relative to a side surface of said slide block.

17. A rail structure according to claim 16 wherein said mount includes a tapered surface facing said slide block that provides clearance for pivoting said slide block.
