Abstract

A surgical stapling apparatus includes a staple cartridge and an anvil member. The staple cartridge includes a plurality of surgical fasteners disposed in rows of retention slots. The staple cartridge may have an annular or linear configuration of retention slots. The tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge may be tapered or stepped. The anvil member has a tissue contacting surface that includes a number of pockets arranged for substantially aligning with the retention slots. In addition, the tissue contacting surface of the anvil member may complement the tissue contacting surface of the staple cartridge.

Claims (20)

1. A staple cartridge for a surgical stapling apparatus comprising:

a convex surface having a center, the convex surface including left and right sides extending away from the center, the convex surface having a first and a second retention slot;

a first surgical fastener disposed in the first retention slot and a second surgical fastener disposed in the second retention slot, the first and second surgical fasteners each having a backspan and a pair of legs, the first surgical fastener having a first leg length, the second surgical fastener having a second leg length, the second leg length being different than the first leg length.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a third surgical fastener disposed in a third retention slot, the third surgical fastener including a backspan and a pair of legs having a third leg length, the third leg length is different than the first leg length.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 2 , wherein the third leg length is different than the second leg length.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a knife slot located through the center of the convex surface.

5. A tool for a surgical stapling instrument, comprising the staple cartridge of claim 4 and an anvil member.

6. The tool of claim 5 , further comprising a knife capable of traveling through the knife slot.

7. The staple cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the convex surface varies in height, the first retention slot being disposed at a first location on the convex surface, the second retention slot being disposed at a second location on the convex surface, the first location having a greater height than the second location on the convex surface.

8. The staple cartridge of claim 7 , wherein the first leg length is shorter than the second leg length.

9. A surgical stapling instrument comprising:

a convex surface having a center, the convex surface including left and right sides extending away from the center, the convex surface having a first and a second retention slot;

a first surgical fastener disposed in the first retention slot and a second surgical fastener disposed in the second retention slot, the first and second surgical fasteners each having a backspan and a pair of legs, the first surgical fastener having a first leg length, the second surgical fastener having a second leg length, the second leg length being different than the first leg length; and

an anvil member cooperative with the staple cartridge such that when the anvil member is proximate to the staple cartridge a gap is defined therebetween, the gap at a first location between the convex surface and the anvil member being different from the gap at a second location between the convex surface and the anvil member.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the anvil member has a substantially planar tissue contacting surface.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , further comprising a knife slot located through the center of the convex surface.

12. The tool of claim 11 , further comprising a knife capable of traveling through the knife slot.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 9 , wherein the convex surface varies in height, the first retention slot being disposed at a first location on the convex surface, the second retention slot being disposed at a second location on the convex surface, the first location having a greater height than the second location on the convex surface.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the first leg length is shorter than the second leg length.

15. The staple cartridge of claim 14 , further comprising a knife slot and wherein the first surgical fastener is closer to the knife slot than the second surgical fastener.
