Abstract

There is disclosed methods and apparatuses for multi-view video transmission and reception. The method comprises receiving a first sequence of pictures from a first view; and receiving a second sequence of pictures from a second view. The first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures are divided into a first period of pictures and a second period of pictures, wherein no picture in the second period of pictures precedes any picture in the first period of pictures in output order. At least a third sequence of pictures is obtained of at least one view between the first view and the second view covering the first period of pictures. Said at least the third sequence of pictures and a first set of pictures of the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures that belong to the second period of pictures are encoded.

Claims (82)

1. A method for a device comprising:

receiving a first sequence of pictures from a first view and a second sequence of pictures from a second view, the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures covering a second period of pictures;

obtaining at least a third sequence of pictures of at least one view between the first view and the second view covering a first period of pictures; wherein no picture in the second period of pictures precedes any picture in the first period of pictures in output order;

encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures; and

encoding the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures.

2. The method according to claim 1 comprising:

obtaining said first sequence of pictures from a first video capturing device; and

obtaining said second sequence of pictures from a second video capturing device.

3. The method according to claim 2 comprising:

obtaining said at least the third sequence of pictures from a third video capturing device.

4. The method according to claim 1 comprising:

receiving or obtaining at least one of a fourth sequence of pictures from the first view, a fifth sequence of pictures from the second view, and the at least the third sequence of pictures, wherein the fourth sequence of pictures and the fifth sequence of pictures cover the first period of pictures;

examining said at least one of the fourth sequence of pictures, the fifth sequence of pictures, and the at least the third sequence of pictures; and

using said examining to determine whether said first period of pictures comprises a scene change; and

if so, encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures.

5. The method according to claim 1 comprising:

providing an indication of the encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures.

6. The method according to claim 1 comprising:

using a left view of a stereo video signal as said first view and a right view of the stereo video signal as said second view.

7. A method for a device comprising:

receiving an encoded sequence of pictures from at least one view among a first view, a second view and at least one third view between the first view and the second view;

decoding said encoded sequence of pictures;

examining whether said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view; and

if the examining indicates that said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view, generating a rendered first view and a rendered second view on the basis of said decoded sequence of pictures.

8. The method according to claim 7 comprising:

copying said decoded sequence of pictures to pictures of said rendered first view and to pictures of said rendered second view.

9. The method according to claim 7 wherein

said examining comprises receiving and interpreting an indication of whether the at least one third view is represented in said encoded sequence of pictures.

10. The method according to claim 7 wherein

said examining comprises concluding that said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view when exactly one view is present in said encoded sequence of pictures.

11. An apparatus comprising:

at least a processor, a memory operatively connected to the processor and having computer coded instructions stored therein, said instructions when executed by the processor causing the apparatus to perform:

receiving a first sequence of pictures from a first view and

receiving a second sequence of pictures from a second view, the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures covering a second period of pictures;

obtaining at least a third sequence of pictures of at least one view between the first view and the second view covering a first period of pictures, wherein no picture in the second period of pictures precedes any picture in the first period of pictures in output order;

encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures; and

encoding the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

obtaining said first sequence of pictures from a first video capturing device; and

obtaining said second sequence of pictures from a second video capturing device.

13. The apparatus according to claim 12 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

obtaining said at least the third sequence of pictures from a third video capturing device.

14. The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

receiving or obtaining at least one of a fourth sequence of pictures from the first view, a fifth sequence of pictures from the second view, and the at least the third sequence of pictures, wherein the fourth sequence of pictures and the fifth sequence of pictures cover the first period of pictures;

examining said at least one of the fourth sequence of pictures, the fifth sequence of pictures, and the at least the third sequence of pictures; and

using said examining to determine whether said first sequence of pictures comprises a scene change; and

if so, encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures.

15. The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

providing an indication of the encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures.

16. The apparatus according to claim 11 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

using a left view of a stereo video signal as said first view and a right view of the stereo video signal as said second view.

17. An apparatus comprising at least a processor, a memory operatively connected to the processor and having computer coded instructions stored therein, said instructions when executed by the processor causing the apparatus to perform:

receiving an encoded sequence of pictures from at least one view among a first view, a second view and at least one third view between the first view and the second view;

decoding said encoded sequence of pictures;

examining whether said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view; and

if the examining indicates that said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view, generating a rendered first view and a rendered second view on the basis of said decoded sequence of pictures.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17 , further comprising instructions causing the apparatus to perform:

copying said decoded sequence of pictures to pictures of said rendered first view and to pictures of said rendered second view.

19. The apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein

said examining comprises receiving and interpreting an indication of whether the at least one third view is represented in said encoded sequence of pictures.

20. The apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein said examining comprises concluding that said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view when exactly one view is present in said encoded sequence of pictures.

21. A computer program product having non-transitory program code stored therein, said program code comprising instructions when executed by a processor performs the following:

receiving a first sequence of pictures from a first view and a second sequence of pictures from a second view, the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures covering a second period of pictures;

obtaining at least a third sequence of pictures of at least one view between the first view and the second view covering a first period of pictures;

wherein no picture in the second period of pictures precedes any picture in the first period of pictures in output order;

encoding said at least the third sequence of pictures; and

encoding the first sequence of pictures and the second sequence of pictures.

22. A computer program product having non-transitory program code stored therein, said program code comprising instructions when executed by a processor performs the following:

receiving an encoded sequence of pictures from at least one view among a first view, a second view and at least one third view between the first view and the second view;

decoding said encoded sequence of pictures;

examining whether said encoded sequence of pictures represents said at least one third view; and
