Abstract

A handpiece having at least one set of piezoelectric elements polarized to produce longitudinal motion when excited at the relevant resonant frequency. The piezoelectric crystals are connected to an ultrasonic horn to which a cutting tip is attached. The horn and/or the cutting tip contains a plurality of diagonal slits or grooves. The slits or grooves produce optimized torsional movement in the cutting tip when the piezoelectric crystals are excited at a second resonant frequency.

Claims (40)

1. An ultrasonic hand piece, comprising:

a shell; and

an ultrasonic horn held within the shell, the horn configured to produce torsional movement of a cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement of the cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude;

wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is alternated with the drive signal having the second frequency; and further wherein the horn is held within the shell so that a torsional nodal point and a proximal longitudinal nodal point are coincident at a plug that seals the shell on an end of the hand piece opposite the cutting tip.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency do not overlap.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency overlap.

4. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 1 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are changed.

5. An ultrasonic hand piece, comprising:

a shell; and

an ultrasonic horn held within the shell, the horn configured to produce torsional movement of a cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement of the cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude;

wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is applied continuously and the drive signal having the second frequency is pulsed; and further wherein the horn is held within the shell so that a torsional nodal point and a proximal longitudinal nodal point are coincident at a plug that seals the shell on an end of the hand piece opposite the cutting tip.

6. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 5 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are changed.

7. An ultrasonic hand piece, comprising:

a shell; and

an ultrasonic horn held within the shell, the horn configured to produce torsional movement of a cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement of the cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude;

wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is pulsed and the drive signal having the second frequency is applied continuously; and further wherein the horn is held within the shell so that a torsional nodal point and a proximal longitudinal nodal point are coincident at a plug that seals the shell on an end of the hand piece opposite the cutting tip.

8. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 7 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are changed.

9. An ultrasonic hand piece, comprising:

a shell; and

an ultrasonic horn held within the shell, the horn configured to produce torsional movement of a cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement of the cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude;

wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency are applied continuously and further wherein the horn is held within the shell so that a torsional nodal point and a proximal longitudinal nodal point are coincident at a plug that seals the shell on an end of the hand piece opposite the cutting tip.

10. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 9 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are changed.

11. An ultrasonic hand piece, comprising:

a shell; and

an ultrasonic horn held within the shell, the horn configured to produce torsional movement of a cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement of the cutting tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and second amplitude;

wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency are provided in pulses that overlap completely; and further wherein the horn is held within the shell so that a torsional nodal point and a proximal longitudinal nodal point are coincident at a plug that seals the shell on an end of the hand piece opposite the cutting tip.

12. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 11 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are changed.

13. The ultrasonic hand piece of claim 11 wherein the first amplitude and the second amplitude are modulated.

14. A phacoemulsification hand piece comprising:

a shell;

a horn with proximal and distal ends, the horn at least partially located in the shell, the horn producing torsional movement in a tip in response to a drive signal having a first frequency and a first amplitude and longitudinal movement in the tip in response to a drive signal having a second frequency and a second amplitude;

the tip coupled to the distal end of the horn;

a plug located near a proximal end of the horn, the plug sealing the horn to the shell;

wherein a torsional nodal point and a longitudinal nodal point are coincident at the plug.

15. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is alternated with the drive signal having the second frequency.

16. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is applied continuously and the drive signal having the second frequency is pulsed.

17. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency is pulsed and the drive signal having the second frequency is applied continuously.

18. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency are applied continuously.

19. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the drive signal having the first frequency and the drive signal having the second frequency are provided in pulses that overlap.

20. The hand piece of claim 14 wherein the first and second amplitudes are changed.
