Abstract

An abrasive particle having an irregular surface, wherein the surface roughness of the particle is less than about 0.95. A method for producing modified abrasive particles, including providing a plurality of abrasive particles, providing a reactive coating on said particles, heating said coated particles; and recovering modified abrasive particles.

Claims (12)

1. A method for producing modified diamond particles, comprising the steps of:

a) providing a plurality of diamond particles;

b) providing a reactive, uniform metal coating on said abrasive diamond particles directly;

c) heating said coated abrasive particles diamond particles;

d) converting diamond particles partly to graphite while forming pits and spikes on the diamond particles;

e) recovering modified abrasive particles diamond particles by removing the graphite and the reactive, uniform coating;

and f) reducing diamond weight by more than 10%, wherein said modified abrasive diamond particles have a surface roughness that is less than about 0.95.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said diamond particles are monocrystalline diamond particles.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said metal coating comprises nickel.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said heating comprises heating said metal coated particles to a temperature of at least about 700° C.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the percentage of metal coating to abrasive particles is about 10 wt % to about 90 wt %.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said modified abrasive particles have an average weight loss of more than about 20% of the original weight of the particle.
