Methods for producing sintered particles from a slurry of an alumina-containing raw material
View Patent ↗Sintered, substantially round and spherical particles prepared from a slurry of a calcined, uncalcined or partially calcined raw material having an alumina content of more than 55% by weight, and a mullite growth promoter in an amount of from about 2 to about 10% dry weight of the total solids in the slurry. The sintered particles are suitable for use as a propping agent or as a foundry media.
1. A substantially round and spherical sintered particle comprising:
an alumina-containing seed; and
a coating, wherein the coating comprises at least about 80% of the total volume of the substantially round and spherical sintered particle;
wherein the coating is formed from a slurry that is sprayed onto the seed, the slurry is prepared form an alumina-containing raw material and iron oxide, wherein the raw material has an alumina content of greater than about 55% by weight, and wherein the slurry has an iron oxide content of from about 2 to about 10% by weight of total solids in the slurry; and
wherein the alumina content of the raw material is at least 10% greater than the alumina content of the seed.
2. The substantially round and spherical sintered particle of claim 1 , wherein the sintered comprising the alumina-containing seed and the coating has an alumina content of greater than about 55% by weight and an iron oxide content of from about 2 to about 10% by weight.
3. The substantially round and spherical sintered particle of claim 1 wherein the sintered particle has:
a specific gravity of from about 2.70 g/cm 3 to about 3.50 g/cm 3 ;
a bulk density of from about 1.55 g/cm 3 to about 1.95 g/cm 3 ;
a crush strength at 10,000 psi of from about 4 percent to about 7 percent; and
a short term conductivity at 10,000 psi of from about 3000 mD-ft to about 3800 mD-ft.
4. The substantially round and spherical sintered particle comprising:
an alumina-containing seed; and
a coating, wherein the coating comprises at least about 80% of the total volume of the substantially round and spherical sintered particle;
wherein the coating is formed from a slurry that is sprayed onto the seed, the slurry is prepared form an alumina-containing raw material and iron oxide, wherein the raw material has an alumina content of greater than about 55% by weight, and wherein the slurry has an iron oxide content of from about 2 to about 10% by weight of total solids in the slurry; and
wherein the alumina content of the raw material is at least 10% less than the alumina content of the seed.
5. The substantially round and spherical sintered particle of claim 4 , wherein the sintered comprising the alumina-containg seed and the coating has an alumina content of greater than about 55% by weight and an iron oxide content of from about 2 to about 10% by weight.
6. The substantially round and spherical sintered particle of claim 4 wherein the sintered particle has:
a specific gravity of from about 2.70 g/cm 3 to about 3.50 g/cm 3 ;
a bulk density of from about 1.55 g/cm 3 to about 1.95 g/cm 3 ;
a crush strength at 10,000 psi of from about 4 percent to about 7 percent; and
a short term conductivity at 10,000 psi of from about 3000 mD-ft to about 3800 mD-ft.
