Abstract

A gripper assembly for anchoring a tool within a downhole passage and for possibly assisting movement of the tool within the passage. The gripper assembly includes an elongated mandrel and flexible toes that can be radially displaced to grip onto the surface of the passage. The toes are displaced by the interaction of a driver slidable on the mandrel and a driver interaction element on the toes. In one embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of rollers and ramps that are longitudinally movable with respect to one another. In another embodiment, the toes are displaced by the interaction of toggles that rotate with respect to the toes.

Claims (14)

1. An elongated tool for use within an elongated passage, comprising a gripper assembly for anchoring the tool within the passage, the gripper assembly comprising:

a plurality of elongated flexible gripper portions each having ends secured to and rotatable with respect to elements of the tool;

a slider element that is longitudinally movable with respect to the gripper portions;

a plurality of links each having a first end and a second end, the first end of each link having a substantially constant radial position and being rotatably engaged with respect to the slider element, the second end of each link having a variable radial position and being rotatably engaged with respect to one of the gripper portions; and

an actuation assembly configured to urge the slider element longitudinally with respect to the gripper portions, the actuation assembly permitting selective urging of the slider element in a first direction and in a second direction opposite the first direction;

wherein:

the gripper assembly has a movement-limiting mode configured to substantially prevent relative longitudinal movement between the gripper portions and the passage, the gripper assembly also having a movement-permissive mode configured to permit relative longitudinal movement between the gripper portions and the passage;

urging the slider element in the first direction relative to the gripper portions causes the gripper assembly to be in the movement-limiting mode; and

urging the slider element in the second direction relative to the gripper portions causes the gripper assembly to be in the movement-permissive mode.

2. The tool of claim 1 , wherein each of the ends of each of the gripper portions has a substantially fixed radial position.

3. The tool of claim 1 , wherein the actuation assembly comprises a piston longitudinally movable with respect to the gripper portions, the piston coupled with respect to the slider element so that urging of the piston in the first direction causes the gripper assembly to be in the movement-limiting mode, and so that urging of the piston in the second direction causes the gripper assembly to be in the movement-permissive mode.

4. The tool of claim 3 , further comprising a valve assembly for directing fluid to exert a pressure force onto the piston in the first direction.

5. The tool of claim 3 , wherein the actuation assembly further comprises a spring that exerts a spring force onto the piston in the second direction.

6. The tool of claim 1 , wherein said longitudinal urging of the slider element produces interaction between the links and the gripper portions.
