Abstract

A rotary pump including an impeller rotatable within a housing. A load is imposed on the impeller as it rotates, in a direction that is substantially parallel to the axis of rotation and wherein the load stabilizes the motion of the impeller. The load may be achieved by magnetically biasing the impeller.

Claims (19)

1. A rotary pump, comprising:

a housing having walls;

a shaftless impeller rotatable within the housing, the impeller including a plurality of blades joined together by struts, wherein each strut has a straight edge extending between blades such that a non-uniform gap is formed between at least one of the walls of the housing and the strut along a length of the strut; and

a loading device configured to impose a biasing load in a direction that is substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the impeller;

wherein the biasing load and non-uniform gap stabilizes the motion of the impeller as the impeller rotates within the housing.

2. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein the pump includes a set of stators positioned below the impeller and the set of stators generates the biasing load.

3. The rotary pump in claim 2 , wherein the biasing load imposed on the impeller is achieved by at least one yoke.

The rotary pump as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of blades have outermost surfaces, with respect to an axial direction, that form with adjacent, opposing surfaces of the housing a hydrodynamic bearing when fluid is conveyed through the housing, wherein the outermost surfaces of the blades and corresponding opposing surfaces of the housing are non-parallel to each other so as to create a tapered spacing between the impeller and housing for the hydrodynamic bearing.

5. The rotary pump in claim 4 , wherein the tapered spacing is between 10 .mu.m and 50 .mu.m.

6. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein a gap of less than 250 .mu.m is formed between the impeller and the housing, when in use.

7. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein the pump is for pumping blood and is implantable within the body of a person.

8. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein a magnet is encapsulated within a blade of the impeller.

9. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein the outermost surfaces of the blades are tapered.

10. The rotary pump in claim 9 , wherein the outermost surfaces are tapered and defined by a curvilinear boundary such that the outermost surfaces are generally shark-fin like in appearance.

11. The rotary pump in claim 10 , wherein the generally shark-fin like surfaces of the blades and the at least one wall of the housing forms a second gap for the hydrodynamic bearing as the impeller rotates within the housing.

12. The rotary pump in claim 1 , wherein the impeller is generally square shaped.

13. The rotary pump in claim 12 , wherein the impeller has four blades and each blade is located at respective corners of the generally square-shaped impeller.

14. The rotary pump in claim 13 , wherein the impeller has four struts and each strut extends respectively between each corner of the generally square-shaped impeller.

15. The rotary pump in claim 13 , wherein each strut forms a hydrodynamic surface.
