Abstract

A method for identifying tooth regions. The method includes generating a first threshold image from a first tooth image by selecting intensity data values higher than a first predetermined threshold value c 1 ; generating a second threshold image from a second tooth image by selecting intensity data values higher than a second predetermined threshold value c 2 ; generating a preliminary tooth regions image that defines at least a first tooth region from the intersection of the first and second threshold images; generating a reference binary image from the first image by selecting intensity data values higher than a third predetermined threshold value c 3 , wherein threshold value c 3 exceeds c 1 ; and generating a refined tooth regions image from at least the first tooth region in the preliminary tooth regions image. The first tooth region is connected to objects in the reference binary image.

displaying, storing, or transmitting the refined tooth regions image.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein one or both of the first and second images of the tooth are obtained from the green channels of the grayscale fluorescence image and grayscale reflectance image, respectively.

3. A method for identifying one or more tooth regions, comprising:

generating a first threshold image from a first fluorescence image of a tooth by selecting intensity data values higher than a first predetermined threshold value c 1 ;

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein

the first fluorescence image is a grayscale fluorescence image of the tooth.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein

the second reflectance image is a grayscale reflectance image of the tooth.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein one or both of the first and second images of the tooth are obtained from the green channels of the fluorescence image and reflectance image, respectively.

7. The method of claim 3 further comprising processing the refined tooth regions image and generating a processed refined tooth regions image.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein generating the processed refined tooth regions image includes removing small areas and filling holes.

9. A non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with a computer program for identifying one or more tooth regions, said program having instructions such that when executed on a computer will cause the computer to perform the steps of:

generating a first threshold image from a first fluorescence image of a tooth by selecting intensity data values higher than a first predetermined threshold value c 1 ;

generating a second threshold image from a second reflectance image of the tooth by selecting intensity data values higher than a second predetermined threshold value c 2 ;

displaying, storing, or transmitting the refined tooth regions image.

10. The computer program of claim 9 , wherein the first fluorescence image is a grayscale fluorescence image of the tooth.

11. The computer program of claim 9 , wherein the second reflectance image is a grayscale reflectance image of the tooth.

12. The computer program of claim 9 , wherein one or both of the first and second images of the tooth are obtained from the green channels of the fluorescence image and reflectance image, respectively.

13. The computer program of claim 9 further comprising processing the refined tooth regions image and generating a processed refined tooth regions image.

14. The computer program of claim 13 , wherein generating the processed refined tooth regions image includes removing small areas and filling holes.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with a computer program for identifying one or more tooth regions, said program having instructions such that when executed on a computer will cause the computer to perform the steps of:

generating a first threshold image from a first image of the tooth by selecting intensity data values higher than a first predetermined threshold value c 1 ;

generating a second threshold image from a second image of the tooth by selecting intensity data values higher than a second predetermined threshold value c 2 , wherein the first image is a grayscale fluorescence image of the tooth and the second image is a grayscale reflectance image of the tooth;
