Abstract

An apparatus and method for use in performing ablation or coagulation of organs and other tissue includes a metallized fabric electrode array which is substantially absorbent and/or permeable to moisture and gases such as steam and conformable to the body cavity. The array includes conductive regions separated by insulated regions arranged to produce ablation to a predetermined depth. Following placement of the ablation device into contact with the tissue to be ablated, an RF generator is used to deliver RF energy to the conductive regions and to thereby induce current flow from the electrodes to tissue to be ablated. As the current heats the tissue, moisture (such as steam or liquid) leaves the tissue causing the tissue to dehydrate. Suction may be applied to facilitate moisture removal. The moisture permeability and/or absorbency of the electrode carrying member allows the moisture to leave the ablation site so as to prevent the moisture from providing a path of conductivity for the current.

Claims (27)

1. A method of ablating walls of a hollow body organ, comprising the steps of:

providing an ablation device comprising a tubular member, a first electrode and second electrode, the first and second electrodes being carried by the tubular member;

positioning the first electrode within a hollow body organ surrounded by walls;

applying suction through the tubular member; and

delivering ablation energy through the first and second electrodes to the walls while continuing to apply suction through the tubular member, wherein the delivering step causes moisture to be released from the walls, and wherein the method includes applying the suction to a hollow interior of the hollow body organ during the delivering step to carry the released moisture away from the walls and through the tubular member to substantially prevent the released moisture from creating a layer of liquid which can provide an electrically conductive pathway between the first and second electrodes.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the body organ includes an opening, wherein the positioning step includes extending the tubular member through the opening, and wherein the method further comprises the step of substantially sealing the opening around the tubular member.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the body organ is a uterus and wherein the opening is a cervical opening.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the providing step further provides the first and second electrodes are bipolar electrodes and wherein the delivering step delivers RF energy to the bipolar electrodes.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising,

monitoring impedance at the walls using one or more sensors during the delivering step.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising,

terminating the ablation energy when the impedance reaches a predetermined criteria.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising,

monitoring wall temperature during the delivering step.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising,

terminating the ablation energy when the wall temperature reaches a predetermined criteria.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein applying suction includes applying suction through a suction tube disposed coaxially with the tubular member.

10. A method of ablating walls of a hollow body organ, comprising the steps of:

providing an ablation device comprising a tubular member, a first electrode and second electrode, the first and second electrodes being carried by the tubular member;

positioning the first electrode within a hollow body organ surrounded by walls;

applying suction through the tubular member; and

delivering ablation energy through the first electrode while continuing to apply suction through the tubular member, wherein the delivering step causes moisture to be released from the walls, and wherein the method includes applying the suction during the delivering step to carry the released moisture through a continuously open flow path through the tubular member.

11. A method of ablating walls of a hollow body organ, comprising the steps of:

providing an ablation device comprising a tubular member, a first electrode and second electrode, the first and second electrodes being carried by the tubular member;

positioning the first electrode within a hollow body organ surrounded by walls;

applying suction through the tubular member; and

delivering ablation energy through the first electrode to the walls while continuing to apply suction through the tubular member, wherein the delivering step causes moisture to be released from the walls, and wherein the method includes applying the suction during the delivering step to carry the released moisture away from the walls and through an opening in the tubular member proximal to at least a portion of the first electrode to substantially prevent the released moisture from creating a layer of liquid which can provide an electrically conductive pathway between the first and second electrodes.
