Abstract

An interleaved soft switching bridge power converter comprises switching poles operated in an interleaved manner so as to substantially reduce turn-on switching losses and diode reverse-recovery losses in the switching pole elements. Switching poles are arranged into bridge circuits that are operated so as to provide a desired voltage, current and/or power waveform to a load. By reducing switching turn on and diode reverse recovery losses, soft switching power converters of the invention may operate efficiently at higher switching frequencies. Soft switching power converters of the invention are well suited to high power and high voltage applications such as plasma processing, active rectifiers, distributed generation, motor drive inverters and class D power amplifiers.

Claims (34)

1. A method of delivering power to a load comprising:

providing a switching circuit comprising a first switching pole circuit disposed across positive and negative voltages coupled to a voltage supply, and a second switching pole circuit disposed across positive and negative voltages coupled to the voltage supply;

switching at least one switch of the first switching pole circuit so as to deliver a current from a load to the first switching pole circuit; and

switching at least one switch of the second switching pole circuit so as to further deliver current from the load to the second switching pole circuit, the switching of the at least one switch of the second switching pole circuit taking place after a first switching of the at least one switch of the first switching pole circuit, but before a second switching of the at least one switch of the first switching pole circuit, so as to substantially reduce a diode reverse recovery current in the first switching pole circuit.

2. A switching circuit comprising:

a positive pole terminal;

a negative pole terminal;

a first switching pole circuit comprising:

a first active switch assembly connected between the positive pole terminal and a first active pole terminal and comprising a first active switch disposed in parallel with a first anti-parallel diode;

a second active switch assembly connected between the negative pole terminal and the first active pole terminal and comprising a second active switch disposed in parallel with a second anti-parallel diode; and

control circuitry configured to interleave operation of the first and second active switches; and

a second switching pole circuit comprising:

a third active switch assembly connected between the positive pole terminal and a second active pole terminal and comprising a third active switch disposed in parallel with a third anti-parallel diode; and

a fourth active switch assembly connected between the negative pole terminal and the second active pole terminal and comprising a fourth active switch disposed in parallel with a fourth anti-parallel diode,

wherein the control circuitry is configured to interleave operation of the third and fourth active switches.

3. The switching circuit of claim 2 , further comprising:

an inductor assembly connected to the first active pole terminal and the second active pole terminal, wherein the inductor assembly comprises:

an inductor assembly common terminal; and

two or more inductor assembly input terminals.

4. The switching circuit of claim 3 , wherein the inductor assembly comprises:

a first inductor connected between a first of the two or more inductor assembly input terminals and the inductor assembly common terminal; and

a second inductor connected between a second of the two or more inductor assembly input terminals and the inductor assembly common terminal.

5. The switching circuit of claim 3 , wherein the inductor assembly comprises:

a main converter inductor connected between the two or more inductor assembly input terminals and the inductor assembly common terminal.

6. The switching circuit of claim 3 , wherein the inductor assembly comprises:

a main converter inductor connected to the inductor assembly common terminal;

a first inductor connected between a first of the two or more inductor assembly input terminals and the main converter inductor; and

a second inductor connected between a second of the two or more inductor assembly input terminals and the main converter inductor.

7. The switching circuit of claim 2 , further comprising an inductor assembly having a coupled inductor.

8. The switching circuit of claim 2 , wherein the switching circuit delivers direct current to a load via the first and second active pole terminals.

9. The switching circuit of claim 2 , wherein the first, second, third, and fourth active switch assemblies are insulated gate bipolar transistors.

10. The switching circuit of claim 2 , wherein the first and second switching pole circuits are each made from a first and second half-bridge power converter.

11. The switching circuit of claim 2 , wherein the first and second switching pole circuits are made from a full-bridge power converter.

12. The switching circuit of claim 2 , wherein there is a phase angle difference less than or greater than a half period between a first voltage of the first active pole terminal and a second voltage of the second active pole terminal.
