Abstract

A method of controlling and managing a plurality of system managers, a plurality of lights and devices, including human interfaces and building automation devices is disclosed. The method includes a system manager collecting data from the plurality of lights and devices. The system manager uses the collected data to determine an adjacency of lights and devices. The system manager dynamically places the plurality of lights and devices into zones and binding human interface devices to the zones, and a dynamically configures the devices to control the zones. The devices perform self-calibration and self-commissioning. The system manager and devices perform ongoing calibration and commissioning. The system manager and devices operate resiliently in case of failure of the system manager, other devices, or software or hardware failures in the devices. The system manager and the devices operate on the collected data to determine usage patterns, and to efficiently manage the plurality of lights and devices.

Claims (24)

1. A method of controlling and managing a plurality of system managers, a plurality of lights and devices, including human interfaces and building automation devices, comprising:

a system manager collecting data from the plurality of lights and devices, the system manage using the collected data to determine an adjacency of lights and devices;

the system manager dynamically placing the plurality of lights and device into zones and binding human interfaces to the zones, and a dynamic configuration of the devices to control the zones, wherein at least one of the human interfaces comprises a personal digital assistant (PDA), and light levels are used to confirm a location of the PDA;

the devices performing self-calibration and self-commissioning;

the system manager and devices performing ongoing calibration and commissioning;

the system manager and devices operating resiliently in case of failure of the system manager, other devices, or software or hardware failures in the devices;

the system manager and the devices operating on the collected data to determine usage patterns, and to efficiently manage the plurality of lights and devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein using light levels to confirm the location of the PDA comprises coordinating flashing of successive locations of lights.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the PDA including software allowing the PDA to operate as a dimmer or switch.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the human interfaces further include sensors, and further comprising determining the adjacency of lights and devices by the sensors.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dynamically instantiating multiple soft-switches based on a number of zoned needed or dynamically created.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising establishing a target light sensor reading at a time of initial commissioning of the plurality of lights and devices, and comparing current light readings with the target light sensor reading.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the current light readings with the target light sensor reading are compared at a predetermined frequency.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising incrementing or decrementing power supplied to the plurality of lights depending on an aggregate difference between the current light readings with the target light sensor reading.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining occupancy utilizing low-cost cameras.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising generating pictures of floors below the cameras, and sensing occupancy by detecting changes in images produced by the cameras.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising system managers sharing the pictures, and creating comprehensive images of a building floor based on the shared pictures.

12. A central management system for controlling and managing a plurality of lights and devices, including human interfaces and building automation devices, comprising:

the central management system collecting data from the plurality of lights and devices, the system manage using the collected data to determine an adjacency of lights and devices;

the central management system dynamically placing the plurality of lights and device into zones and binding human interfaces to the zones, and a dynamic configuration of the devices to control the zones, wherein at least one of the human interfaces comprises a personal digital assistant (PDA), and light levels are used to confirm a location of the PDA;

the devices performing self-calibration and self-commissioning;

the central management system and devices performing ongoing calibration and commissioning;

the central management system and devices operating resiliently in case of failure of the system manager, other devices, or software or hardware failures in the devices;

the central management system and the devices operating on the collected data to determine usage patterns, and to efficiently manage the plurality of lights and devices.
