Abstract

A moisture proof electrical connector assembly for securing an electrical metal tube or conduit to a connector body having opposed end portions and having a bore extending therethrough wherein an end portion includes a first linear length sized and shaped to receive a metal tube or conduit and a second linear length having a diverging inner surface provided with an intermediate shoulder for delineating the first length form the second linear length, and a complementary sealing gland for rendering the entire assembly moisture proof.

Claims (59)

1. An electrical coupling assembly comprising:

a coupling body,

a bore extending through said coupling body and defining opposed end portions terminating in opposed end openings,

a metal conduit fitted into each of said end portions,

a radially outwardly extending flange circumscribing said coupling body between said end openings,

an internal shoulder within said bore forming a stop,

each of said opposed end portions having a first linear length and a second linear length separated by a stepped shoulder,

said first linear length of each of said opposed end portions being an internal surface sized and shaped to receive an end portion of said electrical metal conduit,

and said second linear length being an internal surface which diverges toward the associated end opening,

a 360 degree split compression ring fitted onto an end portion of each of said metal conduits,

a sealing gland fitted onto an end portion of each of said metal conduits,

and a fastening nut adapted to be fitted onto an end portion of each of said metal conduits for securing said metal conduits to a corresponding end portion of said coupling body whereby said associated sealing gland is wedged into sealing relationship with its corresponding second linear length as said compression ring is compressed onto its associated conduit to positively secure and electrically ground said associated connected conduit as the fastening nut is tightened onto its associated end portion of said coupling body.

2. An electrical coupling as defined in claim 1 wherein said sealing gland includes:

a ring portion having a ring inlet opening and a ring outlet opening,

said ring portion having an outer peripheral surface that slopes radially outwardly from said ring outlet opening toward said ring inlet opening, and

a radially and outwardly extending flange circumscribing said ring inlet opening.

3. A pipe assembly comprising:

a connector body having opposed end portions,

a bore extending through said connector body from one of said opposed end portions to the other of said opposed end portions,

said bore defining opposed end openings,

at least one of said opposed end portions having a first linear length and a second linear length,

a metal conduit receivable in said one of said end portions,

said first linear length having a size and shape for snugly receiving an end portion of said metal conduit,

said bore having an internal stop shoulder for limiting the distance said metal conduit may be inserted into said one end portion,

an intermediate stepped shoulder within said bore longitudinally spaced from said stop shoulder to define said first linear length from said second linear length of said one end portion,

said second linear length having an internal surface which diverges outwardly toward the adjacent end opening,

a sealing gland fitted onto an end portion of said metal conduit,

said sealing gland having a sloping outer surface that complements the internal diverging surface of said second linear length,

a metallic split compression ring circumscribing said end portion of said metal conduit,

said one end portion being externally threaded, and

an internally threaded fastening nut for mating with said externally threaded one end portion for securing said conduit to said one end portion whereby said sealing gland is urged into fluid tight relationship with the internal surface of said second linear length and said conduit, and said compression ring being compressed onto said conduit to positively secure and electrically ground said metal conduit to said one end portion of said connector body as said fastening nut is tightened thereon.

4. An electrical conduit connector assembly for holding a metal conduit comprising:

a connector body having a bore with an externally threaded outlet end portion and an externally threaded inlet end portion;

a flange formed on the exterior of said connector body between the externally threaded outlet end portion and the externally threaded inlet end portion;

a lock nut threaded on the externally threaded outlet end portion;

an internal shoulder formed in the bore of said connector body;

a distal portion having a uniform diameter extending from said internal shoulder towards the externally threaded inlet end portion, whereby the metal conduit is snugly received;

an inlet portion extending from said distal portion to an inlet opening, said inlet portion having a taper or diameter progressively increasing toward the inlet opening;

a stepped shoulder formed in the bore separating said distal portion and said inlet portion;

a sealing ring having a ring portion and a collar or outwardly extending flange, the ring portion placed within the inlet opening;

a compression ring placed adjacent the collar or outwardly extending flange;

a fastener nut having internal threads and a cam surface threaded onto the externally threaded inlet end portion of said connector body, whereby the cam surface engages said compression ring forcing said compression ring against the collar or outwardly extending flange of said sealing ring,

whereby said sealing ring forms a weather tight seal and said compression ring compresses tightly onto the metal conduit precluding any separation of the metal conduit from said connector body.

5. An electrical conduit connector assembly as in claim 4 further comprising:

a resilient washer placed between said lock nut and said flange.

6. An electrical conduit connector assembly as in claim 4 wherein:

the ring portion of said sealing ring complements the taper or diameter progressively increasing toward the inlet opening.

7. An electrical conduit connector assembly as in claim 4 wherein:

said sealing ring comprises plastic.

8. An electrical connector assembly for holding a metal conduit comprising:

a coupler body having a bore extending therethrough, said bore defining an end portion terminating in an end opening,

the end portion having a first inner linear length and a second outer linear length separated by a stepped shoulder,

said first inner linear length having a shape and size to snugly receive an end portion of the metal conduit, and

said second outer linear length having an internal surface that diverges outwardly toward the end opening,

a tubular sealing gland having a bore sized to be fitted onto the metal conduit,

said tubular sealing gland having a diverging outer surface complementing the internal surface of said second outer linear length,

a metallic split compression ring loosely fitted onto the metal conduit,

and a fastening nut fitted onto the end portion for securing the metal conduit to the end portion whereby said tubular sealing gland is urged into sealing relationship with said internal surface of the second linear length, and compressing said metallic compression ring onto the metal conduit,

the bore including an internal stop shoulder defining a stop to limit the distance the metal conduit is inserted into the end portion.
