Abstract

Thin conductive metal coatings suitable for flexible nonmetal fine wires and leads are described. Polymer clad silica fiber cores are produced by plasma coating with dual layers of metals such as silver, gold or titanium to provide micro thin leads such as those used for pacemakers that are resistant to flexing breakage, and are conductive. The metal surfaces can be engineered to promote cell adhesion so that tissue scarring in vivo is greatly reduced. Nanostructure and thickness of the metal coating can be controlled to provide radiopaque surfaces on nonmetal medical devices and lead wires.

Claims (16)

. A flexible microthin fine wire or lead suitable for in vivo implantation, comprising an ion plasma deposited dual layer thin metal conductive surface over a nonconducting core.

. The flexible wire or lead of claim 1 wherein the nonconducting core comprises a polymer, glass, silicon, ceramic or combinations thereof.

. The flexible wire or lead of claim 1 wherein the deposited metal is aluminum, titanium, platinum gold, silver, or combinations thereof.

. The flexible wire or lead of claim 1 wherein the dual layer comprises a first deposited layer of metal particulates having a size less than 1 micron.

. The flexible wire or lead of claim 4 wherein the dual layer comprises a second deposited layer of metal macroparticles having a size greater than 1 micron.

. The flexible wire or lead of claim 1 wherein said wire has a flexibility of up to five million cycles.

. A flexible conductive wire or lead coated with a nanostructured silver/silver oxide macroparticulate coating atop a macroparticulate-free nanostructured metal undercoat.

. The wire or lead of claim 7 comprising a polymer.

. The wire or lead of claim 8 wherein the polymer is polyimide, acrylate, Teflon (PTFE) or silicone.

. The wire or lead of claim 7 which has a diameter of about 150 to about 250 nm.

. The wire or lead of claim 7 wherein the macroparticulate surface coating density is about 1000 to about 90,000 macroparticules/nm 2 .

. The wire or lead of claim 7 comprising a metal.

. The wire or lead of claim 7 wherein the macropartiuclate-free undercoat is silver/silver oxide.

. The wire or lead of claim 13 wherein the silver/silver oxide undercoat is adhered to a helical or mesh scaffold.

. The wire or lead of claim 1 comprising a cardiac pacemaker lead.

. The wire or lead of claim 15 wherein the lead is attached to a device for controlling or monitoring electrical input.
