Abstract

The present invention is directed to implantable bioabsorbable non-woven self-cohered web materials having a high degree of porosity. The web materials are very supple and soft, while exhibiting proportionally increased mechanical strength in one or more directions. The web materials often possess a high degree of loft. The web materials can be formed into a variety of shapes and forms suitable for use as implantable medical devices or components thereof.

Claims (11)

1. An implantable material comprising a fibrous non-woven polymeric web material having a percent porosity of at least ninety, a volume density of less than 0.13 grams per cubic centimeter, a matrix tensile strength greater than twenty megapascals as measured in one or more directions, wherein said fibrous non-woven polymeric web material comprises filaments with a mean diameter of 16 to 20 microns, and a non-bioabsorbable material attached to said non-woven polymeric web material.

2. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said percent porosity is at least ninety-five.

3. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said volume density is less than 0.07 grams per cubic centimeter.

4. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said polymeric web material is bioabsorbable.

5. The implantable material of claim 4 wherein said bioabsorbable polymeric web material comprises polyglycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate block co-polymer.

6. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said web material comprises continuous filaments.

7. The implantable material of claim 6 wherein said continuous filaments are self-cohered.

8. The implantable material of claim 6 wherein said continuous filaments are bioabsorbable.

9. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said non-bioabsorbable material is polymeric.

10. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said non-bioabsorbable material is metallic.

11. The implantable material of claim 1 wherein said non-bioabsorbable material is a structural element.
