Abstract

Systems and methods for dynamically defending a site from lightning strikes are provided. The systems and methods involve dynamically altering electrostatic fields above the site and/or dynamically intervening in lightning discharge processes in the vicinity of the site.

Claims (26)

1. A system, comprising:

a sensor arranged to detect a lightning step leader descending from and/or an upward earth streamer ascending toward an overhead atmospheric charge accumulation;

a device coupled to the sensor and arranged to raise or lower a potential of a lightning arrestor, the lightning arrestor configured to intercept a lightning stroke by providing a low impedance path to ground, using a bias voltage in response to the detected step leader and/or upward earth streamer; and

a controller configured to control the device to raise or lower the potential of the lightning arrestor based on a biasing schedule including (A) an amount of bias voltage to apply to the lightning arrestor and (B) a set of application times during which the bias voltage is applied to the lighting arrestor,

wherein, raising or lowering the potential of the lightning arrestor creates a polarizing field above the lightning arrestor and the device,

wherein the polarizing field interacts with the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation,

wherein the biasing schedule is set by the controller based at least on a model of the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation, sensor data, and a user-defined prioritization of different portions of a protected site, and

wherein the device is disposed between a ground and a tip of the lightning arrestor.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is deployed to protect a site, and wherein the device is arranged to direct a lightning strike away from the site by modifying an overhead charge accumulation.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a capacitor.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a power supply configured to be energized by a solar photovoltaic array.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a current source.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to provide a conducting path to an earth termination network by modifying the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation using the polarizing field.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to provide, for a lightning stroke current, a conducting path between a ground and the overhead charge accumulation which reduces the overhead charge accumulation.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the polarizing field created as a result of raising or lowering the potential of the lightning arrestor causes the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation to be reduced through a conducting path between the ground and the overhead charge accumulation.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the polarizing field created as a result of raising or lowering the potential of the lightning arrestor results in a greater effective height of the lightning arrestor for intercepting an atmospheric electrical discharge.

10. A method, comprising:

sensing a lightning step leader descending from and/or an upward earth streamer ascending toward an overhead atmospheric charge accumulation;

determining, using a controller, a biasing schedule including (A) an amount of bias voltage to apply to a lightning arrestor and (B) a set of application times during which the bias voltage is applied to the lighting arrestor, the biasing schedule determined based at least on a model of the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation, sensor data, and a user-defined prioritization of different portions of a protected site;

providing, using a biasing device configured to bias a lightning arrestor and according to the biasing schedule, a polarizing field above the lightning arrestor in response to the detected step leader and/or upward earth streamer, wherein the polarizing field interacts with the overhead charge accumulation,

wherein the lightning arrestor is configured to intercept a lightning stroke by providing a low impedance path to ground.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein providing a polarizing field above a lightning arrestor comprises injecting charges at one or more lightning arrestors of an air termination network about a selected ground termination location for a lightning strike.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the polarizing field above the lightning arrestor is provided using a voltage biasing element which includes a power supply configured to be energized by a solar photovoltaic array.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein providing a polarizing field above a lightning arrestor comprises injecting a current to the lightning arrestor.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the polarizing field causes the overhead atmospheric charge accumulation to be reduced through a conducting path between the ground and the overhead charge accumulation.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the polarizing field results in a greater effective height of the lightning arrestor for intercepting an atmospheric electrical discharge.
