Abstract

Improved devices, systems and methods for treating a tissue region provide straightforward, yet reliable ways for installing diverse functional components within the confined space of a catheter-based instrument.

Claims (34)

1. A catheter assembly comprising

a catheter shaft having a catheter lumen accommodating passage of an irrigation tube,

an energy delivery device carried by the catheter, the energy delivery device including a plurality of support arms, the support arms including a first lumen and a second lumen, wherein the first and second lumens have a stepped proximal configuration,

a plurality of electrodes, each electrode carried by one of the plurality of support arms, the electrodes being advanceable from the first lumen outward from the support arm through a first opening in the support arm and retractable within the first lumen through the first opening, and

an irrigation manifold coupled to the energy delivery device and fixed with respect to the catheter shaft and in fluid communication with the second lumens and the irrigation tube,

wherein irrigation fluid is directed through the irrigation tube to the manifold and exiting from the manifold for flowing into the second lumens of the support arms and further flowing for delivery out through an irrigation opening in the support arms communicating with the second lumen, wherein the irrigation opening communicating with the second lumen discharges irrigation fluid in the vicinity where the electrode projects through the first opening communicating with the first lumen.

2. An assembly as in claim 1 ,

wherein the fluid is discharged directly at the base of the electrode.

3. An assembly of claim 1 , wherein the catheter shaft has an inflation lumen to receive a balloon inflation tube.

4. An assembly of claim 3 , wherein the catheter shaft has an aspiration lumen to receive an aspiration tube.

5. An assembly of claim 4 , wherein the catheter shaft has a wire lumen to receive electrode supply wires.

6. An assembly of claim 3 , wherein the catheter shaft has an aspiration lumen to receive an aspiration tube and a wire lumen to receive electrode supply wires.

7. An assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a distal shaft component engaging the catheter shaft and enclosing a portion of the irrigation tube.

8. An assembly of claim 1 , wherein the support arms are expandable by a balloon.

9. An assembly of claim 1 , wherein irrigation fluid is channeled through the support arms from a single irrigation source.

10. An assembly of claim 1 , wherein the electrode within the support arm is isolated from contact with the irrigation fluid.

11. An assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of thermocouple wires extending through the support arms.

12. An assembly of claim 1 , wherein the irrigation manifold includes a plurality of openings configured to receive proximal ends of the support arms.

13. An assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an irrigation tube positioned at a proximal portion of the irrigation manifold, the irrigation tube supplying irrigation fluid for discharge distally of the manifold for flow into the support arms.

14. A catheter assembly comprising

a catheter shaft having a catheter lumen accommodating passage of an irrigation tube,

an energy delivery device carried by the catheter, the energy delivery device including a plurality of support arms, the support arms including a first lumen and a second lumen,

a plurality of electrodes, each electrode carried by one of the plurality of support arms, the electrodes being advanceable from the first lumen outward from the support arm through a first opening in the support arm and retractable within the first lumen through the first opening, and

an irrigation manifold coupled to the energy delivery device and the catheter shaft in fluid communication with the second lumens and the irrigation tube,

wherein irrigation fluid is directed through the irrigation tube to the manifold and exiting from the manifold for flowing into the second lumens of the support arms and further flowing for delivery out through an irrigation opening in the support arms communicating with the second lumen, wherein the catheter shaft has a scalloped external configuration forming a scalloped region.

15. An assembly of claim 14 , wherein a plurality of tubes extend from the scalloped region.

16. A catheter assembly comprising

a catheter shaft having a catheter lumen accommodating passage of an irrigation tube,

an energy delivery device carried by the catheter, the energy delivery device including a plurality of support arms, the support arms including a first lumen and a second lumen,

a plurality of electrodes, each electrode carried by one of the plurality of support arms, the electrodes being advanceable from the first lumen outward from the support arm through a first opening in the support arm and retractable within the first lumen through the first opening, and

an irrigation manifold coupled to the energy delivery device and the catheter shaft in fluid communication with the second lumens and the irrigation tube,

wherein irrigation fluid is directed through the irrigation tube to the manifold and exiting from the manifold for flowing into the second lumens of the support arms and further flowing for delivery out through an irrigation opening in the support arms communicating with the second lumen, wherein the first and second lumens have a stepped proximal configuration.

17. An assembly of claim 16 , wherein a proximal end of the first lumen extends proximally of a proximal end of the second lumen.

18. An assembly of claim 16 , wherein each of the support arms has a generally rectilinear shape.
