Abstract

A method to confirm delivery of data to a receiving device via a sending socket is disclosed. One embodiment of the method comprises determining when a predetermined amount of data has been removed from a send buffer of the sending socket and sending a confirmation when the predetermined amount of data has been removed from the send buffer. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Claims (30)

1. A method to confirm delivery of data from a sending device to a receiving device via a sending socket, the sending socket being associated with the sending device and having a send buffer, the method comprising:

writing the data to be delivered to the send buffer;

removing the data from the send buffer in response to receiving, at the sending socket, an acknowledgement from a receiving socket of the receiving device that the receiving socket has received the data;

using a standard socket application programming interface (API) command, determining when available space in the send buffer reaches a threshold, said threshold being based at least in part on the size of the send buffer, to indicate that the data has been removed from the send buffer; and

using the standard socket API command, informing a confirmation delivery application of the sending device when the available space in the send buffer reaches the threshold to thereby confirm delivery of the data.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining said size of the send buffer; and

setting the threshold based at least in part on the said size of the send buffer.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending and receiving sockets participate in a transmission control protocol.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending device is a server.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein an application running on the receiving device capable of participating in a hypertext transfer protocol requests the data and an application running on the sending device capable of participating in the hypertext transfer protocol sends the data.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving device comprises a mobile communication device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the command is select.

8. A processing system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory storage medium that stores instructions which, if executed by the processor, will cause the processing system to perform a plurality of operations to confirm delivery of data from a sending device to a receiving device via a sending socket, the sending socket being associated with the sending device and having a send buffer, the plurality of operations comprising:

writing the data to be delivered to the send buffer;

removing the data from the send buffer in response to receiving, at the sending socket, an acknowledgement from a receiving socket of the receiving device that the receiving socket has received the data;

using a standard socket application programming interface (API) command, determining when available space in the send buffer reaches a threshold, said threshold being based at least in part on the size of the send buffer, to indicate that the data has been removed from the send buffer; and

using the standard socket API command, informing a confirmation delivery application of the sending device when the available space in the send buffer reaches the threshold to thereby confirm delivery of the data.

9. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the sending and receiving sockets include at least one socket capable of participating in a transmission control protocol.

10. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of operations further comprises:

determining said size of the send buffer; and

setting the threshold based at least in part on said size of the send buffer.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising issuing the standard socket API command to the sending socket, wherein informing the confirmation delivery application when the available space in the send buffer reaches the threshold comprises returning the standard socket API command to the confirmation delivery application.

12. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the sending device is a server.

13. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein an application running on the receiving device capable of participating in a hypertext transfer protocol requests the data and an application running on the sending device capable of participating in the hypertext transfer protocol sends the data.

14. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the receiving device comprises a mobile communication device.

15. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the command is select.

16. The processing system of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of operations further comprises issuing the standard socket API command to the sending socket, wherein informing the confirmation delivery application when the available space in the send buffer reaches the threshold comprises returning the standard socket API command to the confirmation delivery application.
