Abstract

A camera module is disclosed including an image capture portion, a base portion, and a pivot assembly. The image capture portion has a lens system, an imaging sensor and an image processor. The image sensor captures an image in a first color space. The image processor receives the image in the first color space and converts the image to a second color space which is a device independent color space. The base portion has electrical contacts for connecting to a peripheral device in order to transfer the image in the second color space to the peripheral device. The pivot assembly connects the image capture portion to the base portion and allows the image capture portion to be movable about the pivot assembly.

Claims (9)

1. A camera module including:

a cylindrically shaped image capture portion having a lens system, an imaging sensor and an image processor, the image sensor capturing an image in a first color space, and the image processor receiving the image in the first color space and converting the image to a second color space, the second color space being a device independent color space;

a cylindrically shaped base portion having electrical contacts for connecting to a cylindrically shaped printer in order to transfer the image in the second color space to cylindrically shaped printer, wherein the image capture portion receives all its power over the electrical contacts from the cylindrically shaped printer;

a pivot assembly for connecting said cylindrically shaped image capture portion to said cylindrically shaped base portion and allowing said image capture portion to be movable about said pivot assembly, and having a flexible printed circuit board traversing the pivot assembly providing interconnection between said image processor and said electrical contacts; and

wherein the cylindrically shaped image capture portion is movable between an inoperative position where said cylindrically shaped image capture portion and said cylindrically shaped base portion are co-axial, and an operative position where the axis of said cylindrically shaped image capture portion is substantially perpendicular to the axis of said cylindrically shaped base portion.

2. The camera module of claim 1 , wherein said image capture portion is formed inside a cylindrical body, an imaging direction of said lens system being in the direction of the principle axis of the cylindrical body.

3. The camera module of claim 1 wherein said base portion further includes a bayonet fitting for providing a physical connection between said camera module and said printer.

4. The camera module of claim 1 wherein the second color space is the contone L*a*b* color space.

5. The camera module of claim 1 wherein the image capture portion stores the image in storage provided in the printer.
