Abstract

A downhole pumping assembly has a tubing string with plural barrels which are arranged in-line with the tubing. The tubing string has a seating location adjacent to each barrel. A standing valve arrangement, which includes a standing valve and a seating device, is located with the standing valve adjacent to the lower end of one of the barrels. A plunger has a traveling valve that is located for reciprocation within the one barrel. The plunger has a clearance with each of the barrels so as to form a fluid seal. The plunger reciprocates inside the barrel so as to lift fluid to the surface. Over time, the barrel will exhibit wear. Instead of pulling the entire tubing string to replace the barrel, the standing valve and the plunger are relocated to one of the other barrels located in the tubing string and reciprocation is resumed to resume pumping.

Claims (16)

1. A method of operating a sucker rod pump assembly in a well that extends from a surface of the earth into the ground, comprising the steps of:

a) providing at least a first barrel and a second barrel incorporated into a tubing string in the well with the first barrel closer to the surface than the second barrel, and a plunger reciprocated by a sucker rod string from the surface of the well;

b) locating the plunger in one of the first or the second barrel;

c) reciprocating the plunger within the one of the first or the second barrel and producing fluid from the well to the surface;

d) suspending the reciprocation of the plunger;

e) relocating the plunger to the other of the first or the second barrel while maintaining the tubing string in the well;

f) reciprocating the plunger within the other of the first or the second barrel and producing the fluid from the well to the surface, wherein when the plunger is in the second barrel the sucker rod string reciprocates through the first barrel.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pump assembly comprises a standing valve, comprising the steps of:

a) locating the standing valve in the one of the first or the second barrel before the step of reciprocating the plunger within the one of the first or second barrel;

b) relocating the standing valve to the other of the first or the second barrel before the step of reciprocating the plunger within the other of the first or the second barrel.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of relocating the plunger to the other of the first or the second barrel further comprises the step of relocating the plunger from the second barrel to the first barrel.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of relocating the plunger to the other of the first or the second barrel further comprises the step of relocating the plunger from the first barrel to the second barrel.

5. A method of installing a sucker rod pump assembly into a well that extends from a surface of the earth into the ground, comprising the steps of:

a) assembling a tubing string, the tubing string having a first barrel and a second barrel, and inserting the tubing string into the well so that the first barrel is closer to the surface than is the second barrel and providing a recess in an interior of the tubing string adjacent to each of the first and second barrels;

b) inserting a standing valve into a selected one of the first or second barrels and installing the standing valve into the respective recess;

c) inserting the plunger with the traveling valve into the selected first or second barrel, wherein reciprocation of the plunger driven by a sucker rod from the surface within the selected first or second barrel produces fluid to the surface and when the standing valve is located in the recess of the second barrel the sucker rod reciprocates through the first barrel.
