Abstract

A capacitor and a method for assembling a capacitor. A capacitor is assembled from a case, which contains an anode that is electrically coupled to the case and defines wells or slots receiving a plurality of cathode plates. A header is placed on the case. The header also supports a glass seal that insulates the lead tube and cathode lead coming from the cathode. Once assembled, the capacitor is filled with electrolyte. A weld extends around the header to secure the header to the case. A bent cathode configuration enables a plurality of cathode plates electrically coupled together from a common cathode plate.

Claims (34)

1. A method of assembling an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

providing an anode within a capacitor case, the anode having a plurality of wells therein, the plurality of wells each being contiguously surrounded for a majority of its boundary by the anode, the anode being electrically coupled to the capacitor case;

placing a plurality of cathodes into the plurality of wells, wherein the plurality of cathodes are electrically separated from the case;

placing liquid electrolyte into the capacitor case; and

sealing the capacitor.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the anode within the capacitor case comprises shaping the anode in the capacitor case to have the plurality of wells and anodizing the anode within the capacitor case.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein providing the anode within the capacitor case comprises shaping the anode separate from the capacitor case and placing the anode into the capacitor case.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising shaping the anode in a plurality of separate pieces and coupling the pieces together for use in the capacitor case.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising welding the plurality of pieces together to form the anode.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising covering at least a portion of the plurality of cathodes with a high surface area capacitive material layer prior to placing the cathodes into the plurality of wells.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the anode within the capacitor case comprises shaping at least one of the plurality of wells in a cylindrical configuration.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming the anode comprising the plurality of wells such that the plurality of wells are each cylindrically shaped wells in the anode.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising forming the plurality of cathodes such that the plurality of cathodes are each cylindrically shaped cathodes.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising coupling the plurality of cathodes together through a plurality of cathode tie plates.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coupling the plurality of cathodes together through a cathode tie plate extending radially in a plurality of directions from a center cathode of the plurality of cathodes to the rest of the plurality of cathodes.

12. A method of assembling an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

forming an anode comprising a plurality of wells therein within a capacitor case, the plurality of wells each being contiguously surrounded for a majority of its boundary by the anode;

electrically coupling the anode to the capacitor case;

placing a plurality of cathodes into the plurality of wells, wherein the plurality of cathodes are electrically separated from the case;

placing liquid electrolyte into the capacitor case; and

sealing the capacitor.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein forming the anode within the capacitor case comprises shaping the anode in the capacitor case to have the plurality of wells and anodizing the anode within the capacitor case.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising covering at least a portion of the plurality of cathodes with a high surface area capacitive material layer prior to placing the cathodes into the plurality of wells.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising forming the anode comprising the plurality of wells such that the plurality of wells are each cylindrically shaped wells in the anode.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising forming the plurality of cathodes such that the plurality of cathodes are each cylindrically shaped cathodes.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising coupling the plurality of cathodes together through a plurality of cathode tie plates.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising coupling the plurality of cathodes together through a cathode tie plate extending radially in a plurality of directions from a center cathode of the plurality of cathodes to the rest of the plurality of cathodes.

19. A method of assembling an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

forming an anode comprising a plurality of wells separate from a capacitor case and then placing the formed anode into the capacitor case, the plurality of wells each being contiguously surrounded for a majority of its boundary by the anode;

electrically coupling the anode to the capacitor case;

placing a plurality of cathodes into the plurality of wells, wherein the plurality of cathodes are electrically separated from the case;

placing liquid electrolyte into the capacitor case; and

sealing the capacitor.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein forming the anode comprising the plurality of wells comprises forming a plurality of cylindrically shaped wells.
