Abstract

A printhead is provided having a plurality of bubble forming chambers, ejection nozzles defined in the chambers, and heaters disposed in the chambers for heating bubble forming liquid in the chambers. Each heater has a bubble nucleation section of a smaller cross section than the rest of that heater. The bubble nucleation section is heated faster that the rest of the heater to cause formation of a gas bubble in the liquid and ejection of the bubbled liquid through the corresponding nozzle. The bubble nucleation section is co-planar with the rest of that heater and remains co-planar when the heater is heated.

Claims (11)

1. A printhead comprising:

a plurality of bubble forming chambers;

ejection nozzles defined in the chambers; and

heaters disposed in the chambers for heating bubble forming liquid in the chambers,

wherein each heater has a bubble nucleation section of a smaller cross section than the rest of that heater, the bubble nucleation section being configured to heat faster than the rest of the heater to nucleate a gas bubble in the liquid for ejection of the bubbled liquid through the corresponding nozzle, the bubble nucleation section being co-planar with the rest of that heater and configured to rotate when the heater is heated such that the bubble nucleation section remains coplanar with the rest of the heater.

2. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 wherein the heaters and chambers are symmetrical about a longitudinal plane.

3. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each chamber has a circular cross section and each heater has an arcuate section concentric with the longitudinal axis of the corresponding chamber, the bubble nucleation section being arranged so that a disc-shaped gas bubble with a point of collapse substantially on the central axis of the chamber is formed thereby.

4. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the bubble nucleation section of each heater is positioned so that gas bubbles are formed at opposite sides of that heater.

5. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the nozzles are incorporated in a structure formed by chemical vapor deposition.

6. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the nozzles are incorporated in a structure which is less than 10 microns thick.

7. A printhead as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each heater is covered by a substantially seamless conformal protective coating.
