Abstract

We have disclosed a modular personal network (MPN) that includes multiple devices that may be worn, carried, or used in close proximity to a user. The devices communicate wirelessly. Functions of the MPN may be modified by adding or removing components. The MPN may communicate with a personal computer. General purpose devices may include a control unit, a display, a user input, and an audio output. The MPN may provide a variety of functions, including time, communication, entertainment, organization, guidance, athletic, medical, travel, outdoors, identity, security, and military.

Claims (15)

1. A personal data collection system comprising a media recording device configured to be worn or carried by a user, a personal data collection device configured to be worn or carried by the user, a storage device configured to be worn or carried by the user for storing media collected by the media recording device and data collected by the personal data collection device, a base station, a communications device for sending media and data from the storage device to the base station, a database for storing user collected data, wherein the personal data collection system is configured to allow the user to tag collected data with other collected data, wherein at least two of the devices are separately worn or carried by the user when in use.

2. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the media recording device comprises a digital camera.

3. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the media recording device comprises a video recorder.

4. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the media recording device comprises a voice recorder.

5. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the personal data collection device comprises text input means.

6. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the personal data collection device comprises an electronic sketchpad.

7. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the personal data collection device comprises a heart rate monitor.

8. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the personal data collection device comprises a speed or position monitor.

9. The personal data collection system of claim 1 further comprising a clock and wherein the system is further configured to tag collected data with the current time.

10. The personal data collection system of claim 1 further comprising a position monitor and wherein the system is further configured to tag collected data with the current location.

11. The personal data collection system of claim 1 further comprising a speech recognition unit and wherein the system is further configured to use input from the speech recognition unit to control at least one of its functions.

12. The personal data collection system of claim 1 wherein the base station comprises a personal computer.

13. The personal data collection system of claim 1 further configured to convert the media and data received by the base station to a common file format.

14. The personal data collection system of claim 1 further configured to load the media and data received by the base station into a database.

15. A method of collecting personal data comprising recording media using a media recording device configured to be worn or carried by a user, collecting personal data using a personal data collection device configured to be worn or carried by the user, storing media recorded by the media recording device and data collected by the personal data collection device in a storage device configured to be worn or carried by the user, and sending recorded media and collected personal data from the storage device to a base station using a communication device, and using a database for storing user collected data, wherein the method of collecting personal data allows the user to tag collected data with other collected data, and wherein at least two of the devices are separately worn or carried by the user when in use.
