Abstract

The various embodiments of the present invention generally provide a control system and a process for an exercise apparatus configurable into a combined treadmill and stepper mode. The apparatus may also be configured into stepper only and treadmill only modes. The apparatus generally includes a master control unit, a first sensor, in communication with the master control unit, which generates a first signal indicative of an effective tread speed for the apparatus, and a resistive element that includes at least one resistance level. Using the first signal, the resistance level, and empirical information, the amount of energy expended by a user of the apparatus may be calculated and the operation of the apparatus controlled. Various sensors, actuators and information, such as that obtained from various data structures, may be utilized in performing calculations and controlling the features, functions and operation of the apparatus.

Claims (30)

1. An exercise apparatus comprising:

at least one treadle including at least one tread movable relative to the at least one treadle;

a first sensor configured to sense first data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus;

a second sensor configured to sense second data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus; and

a master control unit in communication with the first and second sensors;

the exercise apparatus configured to convert between a first operational configuration in which the at least one treadle cannot rise and fall during performance of an exercise on the exercise apparatus and a second operational configuration in which the at least one treadle can rise and fall during performance of an exercise on the exercise apparatus; and

the master control unit configured to collect the first data when the exercise apparatus is in the first operational configuration and configured to collect the second data when the exercise apparatus is in the second operational configuration.

2. The exercise apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tread moves relative to the at least treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the first configuration, and the at least one tread remains stationary relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

3. The exercise apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread and the second data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle.

4. The exercise device of claim 3 , wherein the master control unit is configured to determine a number of steps performed during use of the exercise apparatus based at least in part on the second data.

5. The exercise apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tread moves relative to the at least treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the first configuration, and the at least one tread moves relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

6. The exercise apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread and the second data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle.

7. The exercise apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the master control unit is configured to collect the first data and the second data when the exercise apparatus is in the second operational configuration.

8. The exercise apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tread either moves or remains stationary relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

9. The exercise apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the first data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle and the second data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread.

10. The exercise apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the master control unit is configured to collect the first data and the second data when the exercise apparatus is in the second operational configuration.

11. A method of operating an exercise apparatus including at least one treadle including at least one tread movable relative to the at least one treadle, the method comprising:

configuring the exercise apparatus in a first operational configuration in which the at least one treadle cannot rise and fall during performance of an exercise on the exercise apparatus;

sensing and collecting first data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus while in the first operational configuration;

converting the exercise apparatus to a second operational configuration in which the at least one treadle can rise and fall during performance of an exercise on the exercise apparatus; and

sensing and collecting second data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus while in the second operational configuration.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tread moves relative to the at least treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the first configuration, and the at least one tread remains stationary relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread and the second data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising determining a number of steps performed during use of the exercise apparatus based at least in part on the second data.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tread moves relative to the at least treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the first configuration, and the at least one tread moves relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread and the second data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising sensing and collecting the first data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus when in the second operational configuration.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tread either moves or remains stationary relative to the at least one treadle during performance of the exercise when the exercise apparatus is configured in the second configuration.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the first data relates to vertical movement of the at least one treadle and the second data relates to an effective speed of the at least one tread.

20. The method of claim 19 , further comprising sensing and collecting the first data regarding operation of the exercise apparatus when in the second operational configuration.
