Abstract

The present invention provides a method of evaluating a patient in a hospital prior to discharge to determine if the patient is or is not at risk of early readmission if the patient were to be discharged from the hospital. The invention also provides a method of evaluating and monitoring the condition of a patient after discharge from a hospital. Both methods comprise measuring the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of a body fluid of the patient, a tissue of the patient of both.

Claims (6)

1. A method of evaluating a patient in a hospital for treatment of a disease or condition prior to discharge from the hospital to determine whether the patient is at risk of readmission to the hospital for the same disease or condition, or complications thereof, if the patient were to be discharged from the hospital, the method comprising the following steps:

a. measuring the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of a body fluid of the patient, a tissue of the patient or both; and

b. determining if the ORP is significantly different than the ORP of the same body fluid, tissue or both from normals, wherein a significantly elevated ORP compared to normals indicates that the patient is at risk of readmission for the same disease or condition, or complications thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the ORP is measured within the 24 hours prior to discharge of the patient from the hospital.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the ORP measurement is used in combination with other patient information to determine if the patient is at risk of readmission.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the ORP of a body fluid is measured, and the body fluid is selected from the group consisting blood, plasma or serum.
