Abstract

A medical device includes an insertable portion capable of being inserted into an orifice associated with a body of a patient. The insertable portion comprising an automated head unit capable of being manipulated in at least two axes of motion based at least in part on one or more control signals. The medical device further includes one or more controllers coupled to the automated head unit. In one particular embodiment, the one or more controllers generate the one or more control signals based at least in part on an input signal.

Claims (16)

1. A mid-infrared light-based system, comprising:

a gain fiber of a cladding pumped fiber laser adapted to generate at least a first optical signal comprising one or more wavelengths, the gain fiber comprising a first waveguide structure within an optical oscillator structure to cause lasing;

a second waveguide structure coupled to the gain fiber and operable to wavelength shift at least one wavelength of the first optical signal to a longer wavelength optical signal, the longer wavelength optical signal comprising a wavelength in the range of 1.7 microns or more; and

a third waveguide structure coupled to an output end of the second waveguide structure, the third waveguide structure being part of a scope adapted to be inserted into a patient's body through an orifice during a medical procedure, wherein the third waveguide structure is capable of at least partially transmitting the longer wavelength optical signal; the scope further comprising a focusing element coupled to a distal end of the third waveguide structure, the focusing element adapted to focus at least a portion of the longer wavelength optical signal onto a part of the patient's body.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first waveguide structure at least partially contributes to increasing an optical energy of at least one wavelength of the first optical signal and wherein the increased optical signal energy is communicated from the first waveguide structure at a selected wavelength.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the longer wavelength optical signal is used in a medical selective damage procedure that is adapted to preferentially damage a first tissue type based on a higher absorption in the first tissue type and to cause less collateral damage to a second tissue type.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second waveguide structure is a Raman wavelength shifter comprising a fiber coupled to a plurality of reflective gratings.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the optical oscillator structure comprises one or more reflectors surrounding the gain fiber.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more reflectors comprises one or more fiber gratings.

7. The system of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more reflectors is a reflective mirror.

8. The system of claim 5 , wherein at least one of the one or more reflectors comprises an output coupler.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a pump coupler coupled to the gain fiber.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the focusing element is one or more lenses or a tapered fiber end.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the scope further comprises a housing including a base portion, a flexible portion and a head unit mounted onto the flexible portion.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the longer wavelength optical signal comprises at least one pulse having a pulse width in the range of 2 nanoseconds to 100 milliseconds.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least a portion of the longer wavelength optical signal comprises a pulse repetition rate in the range of 2 Hertz to 100 Megahertz.
