Abstract

The present invention relates generally to the photovoltaic generation of electrical energy. The present invention relates more particularly to photovoltaic roofing products for use in photovoltaically generating electrical energy. One aspect of the invention is a photovoltaic roofing element comprising: a flexible roofing substrate; a photovoltaic element disposed on the flexible roofing substrate; and an electrical connector operatively coupled to the photovoltaic element, wherein the flexible roofing substrate has formed therein a recess shaped to at least partially receive the electrical connector.

Claims (22)

1. A photovoltaic roofing system comprising an electrically-interconnected plurality of photovoltaic roofing elements, each photovoltaic roofing element comprising:

a flexible multilayer asphalt shingle comprising a plurality of asphalt layers;

a photovoltaic element disposed on the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle; and

an electrical connector operatively coupled to the photovoltaic element,

wherein the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle has formed therein a recess shaped to receive the electrical connector, the recess being formed as a hole or a cutout through the entire thickness of at least one, but not all of the asphalt layers of the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle, such that the recess does not go all the way through the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle,

the plurality of photovoltaic roofing elements comprising

a first photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element being disposed entirely within the recess; and

a second photovoltaic roofing element disposed so as to cover the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element.

2. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed in a top surface of the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle.

3. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed in a side of the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle.

4. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is adapted to at least partially receive wires that partially connect the photovoltaic element to mating electrical connectors.

5. A roof comprising a roof deck and a photovoltaic roofing system according to claim 1 disposed on the roof deck.

6. A method for installing the photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , the method comprising disposing on a roof and electrically interconnecting the plurality of photovoltaic roofing elements.

7. The photovoltaic roofing system according to claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box.

8. The photovoltaic system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element is affixedly disposed in the recess.

9. The photovoltaic system according to claim 1 , wherein the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element is movable with respect to the recess.

10. The photovoltaic system according to claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box, and wherein the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element is affixedly disposed in the recess.

11. The photovoltaic system according to claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box, and wherein the electrical connector of the first photovoltaic roofing element is movable with respect to the recess.

12. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed in a top surface of the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle, and wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box.

13. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed in a side of the flexible multilayer asphalt shingle, and wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box.

14. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed as a continuous notch running the length of the shingle.

15. The photovoltaic roofing system of claim 1 , wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the recess is formed as a continuous notch running the length of the shingle, and wherein in each photovoltaic roofing element, the electrical connector is selected from a mating electrical connector and a junction box.
